Post Street photographers... What's your lens?

Hi All,

I love street photography, those candid shots, action shots, still shots...etc

I carry my 50mm f/1.8 II when going for such shooting... Small, fast and more or less draws less attraction to my camera.

What's your lens?

I guess it depends on what I want to shoot on the street. Typically if it is people I will use either my 70-200vr or 70-300vr lens as they don't even know that I am there taking their picture:

3 choices...my 28-70 f/2.8 or 80-200 f/2.8 on my D300 or my Canon G10. The 28-70 has decent range/versatility, the 80-200 gives me standoff distance so as to be unnoticed, and both are fast enough.
My G10 attracts almost no attention and works VERY well for this in good light. A bit better usable range than either the 28-70 or the 80-200 but slower ISO. I loose a little standoff range, but don't have to choose between lenses.

I haven't done much street photography, but I'm starting to with a 35mm f/2 lens. A lot of times street photography is about context and environment contrasting with the subject, so most of the folks who do it seem to be using normal-to-wide primes. Or maybe they're all just members in the church of Cartier-Bresson.

Yeah, I feel more comfortable with a telephoto lens but am much happier with the results when I can get past my own self-consciousness and get close. These were with a 40mm lens on 35mm film. Street photography is one of those things that I keep telling myself I want to do more of but never actually get around to it. I probably need a new lens. Yeah, that's it.
