Default Newbie stumped by GIMP

I am new to the world of photography but have loved snapping photos since I was a kid.

My question is, I have GIMP (and photoscape for easy edits) and quite frankly, I have NO idea how to use it. Any tutorials that you like best?

Default These worked for me, sort of!

Hello all,

Where to learn how to use GIMP. I had a good base experience with Photoshop, which turned out to be of limited help. Bought a book at Amazon, which us currently on loan to a friend. However, the book has a photo of a lizard on the cover, stands out. The book was helpful and appears to cover all the bases.

Second, Youtube. Youtube is the home of nearly every tut on the planet. Search for GIMP and the list goes forever.

My last tip, try Photoshop Elements. Not free of course, but for me does everything I need. Perhaps someday in the future I'll want something more powerful. Maybe I like PE because of my PS experience. Still GIMP is a can-do program.

Thank you for reading my mail. Jerry

I think instead of looking for a tutorial and then applying it to a picture, you should look at the picture and decide what needs to be done.

You can find some good tutorials here:

And some good discussions here:

GIMP is not easy, but if you have patience it will start to come together for you.

There are some brilliant sites that do GIMP tutorials and also if you can extend to it I know everyone shouts Photoshop ....... but I reckon Serif Photoplus X3 is about as good in many ways and only £60 it does HDR and everything else PShop does that a beginner needs and much much more besides.

GIMP is great but you will soon find it's limits ... the site for GIMP tutorials is ..#

I just started playing around with it. Open up your photo, press this button, watch what it does to your photo, press something else, do a combo of them, etc. Youtube is fairly good for tutorials. You can also google Gimp tutorials, you'll find some good ones. Photoshop tutorials mainly work the same but since you are just starting it might be a little difficult to do photoshop tutorials for Gimp (some things work differently). You can do almost anything you can with Photoshop. Once you know what you are doing, it is a pretty powerful tool. I don't agree that you will soon find it's limits, sorry FoG.

GIMP is serious geek stuff. If you learn GIMP, then you know how Photoshop Elements and Capture NX2 and all those other post-processing things work. (Well, maybe not Photoshop ... I don't choose to spend the $$$ to buy and learn about that.)

I make my living being a serious geek. I do photography and pp for a hobby. I use Capture NX2 because I'm now on a Mac at home. Formerly I used Photoshop Elements. I use up my "learning geeky stuff" energy at work, where they pay me for it. So I want to do other sorts of stuff when I'm off work.

If you have lots of geek energy and motivation, then learning to use GIMP could be highly rewarding. If not, you might want to look into PE or NX2 (depending on your platform).

Not yet but I've only been using it for about 11 years...

It is more than adequate for all my digital darkroom and image manipulation needs (although, to be fair, I primarily focus on images shared via the web or for web design - I haven't tested it seriously for professional printing media needs, for example).
