Default how to find places to take pictures.

I was wondering how you guys find places to go out on photo shoots. Do you scout out the area first? Just talk to people? Just randomly go out to one place?

Actually to be honest, I just carry my camera with me all the time.
If I see a picture, I take it!
School, work, out with friends, etc. , you never know when that perfect shot will come along.

It depends what kind of things you want to take pictures of. For example, I love using my camera to take pictures of plants. I frequently tour my back garden, which is not massive but has provided plenty of "willing models"; I also belong to the Royal Horticultural Society and visit their gardens several times a year with taking photos as my main purpose.

As someone said already it depends on what you're shooting. To be honest you can shoot anything you can find if you really put your mind to it. The best thing is of course always have your camera about so if you feel inspired then you're ready.

But if you're talking about shooting for a particular reason, like a portrait or a band then you might want to consider venues that seem suitable to your needs and what you're trying to achieve.

OK, let me give you my take on this conundrum... BigCrustyApe, Susan & Her 5D and I regularly head out into the wild blue.... London of an evening for a shoot... we decide on a tube station and whatever happens happens!... it could end up with us shooting blossoms in a pretty street, it could see us in a grimy underground garage shooting well.. grime... or, people sipping lattes on the upside of town... it's what you make it really. I love shoting and unless my mood says no, i'll always find something that clicks my shutter button. If indeed it is a band you'd like to shoot, find a local pub / bar and get friendly with the owner... (i'm about to ask my local pubs owner...) or, out door venues can usually see you close to the action. or, even buskers - they emit emotion if they're good musicians and I find emotion makes for good photos... (James Morrison started as a busker in Truro and look at him now! - british act) ....just get out there and snap away, you'll find what "takes your fancy" soon enough... Good Luck! [you won't need it..] Sime

Yep, Sime has a good post there. But I fully agree. Just take the camera with you, be willing to take a few pictures, and just snap what inspires you... even if it doesn't. I sometimes have a hard time getting started, but once I do I usually get into the swing of taking pictures and enjoying it. If I don't, I just shrug it off and put the camera away. But yeah, I don't really "find" places to shoot, I just go where my feet take me and bring the camera with

Austin has a plethora of parks & greenbelts, several of which are less than 5 miles from my condo, which makes it nice & convenient for going out on photo walks - and I find that I can do a 6 mile hike (3 miles there & back) with no problems, when I have my camera with me. It may take me a little longer (hour & a half to 2 hours) than usual, but I see so much more, and pay attention to so much more when I have the camera with me. I still think one of the coolest things I've seen yet was a caterpillar munching away on a flower petal.

One of the "blog" items of 100 suggested revisiting the same place often as the light is never quite the same.

I think I live in a perfect area for photography. From my house I can be at the beach in around 15 minutes. I have one park with miles of trails, and the ICW about 5 minuets from me, plus I have multitudes of other state parks with in 20 miles. Plus wild life in mass quantities. Gators, snakes, and almost every kind of bird imaginable.

Sometimes I'll just go out and walk around the yard looking for something to shoot. We have numerous plants, and I can always find a spider, lizard, and sometimes a snake to shoot.

If you've got a GPS and like the outdoors, try geocaching

http://www.geocaching.com/ - guaranteed to take you to some interesting places!

If not, then grab a map and go exploring...
