Default What lens would you use for a photo walk?

Next saturday I am going for a photo walk in a small town, I have never done anything like this before. What lens would those of you that have done this sort of thing suggest that I take with me if I only bring one body and one lens. What about a second lens if I bring another body -- I don't want to be changing lenses.

Thanks

I think I would bring your 24-70, and your 70 -300...this combo gives you speed, if you need it, and wide to zoom telephoto, and image stablization...would be my picks

An old rule of thumb was to use a FL about the widest dim of the frame for Ful Frame that would be 35mm for 1.6 crop sensor about 21 mm. I always found this a little long. But that will depend upon the types of subjects you like to shoot.

A good start would be a 17-50 for crop sensor or 24-70 for full frame.

For me a second lens would be wider but most would prefer something longer. Again that is dependant upon your style.

looking at the lenses you have avaliable. If it were only one lens then the 18-200. If you got two lenses then the 24-70 and the 80-200.

That would be fine if I bring both bodies, not sure I want to lug around two. If I just bring one body would I be better off with the 24-70 f/2.8 which is fast and sharp or the 18-200vr which is not as sharp and not that fast, but the VR gives me a few stops advantage?

Unless you are doing your walk in dim light, you don't need a fast lens.

Of your two choices below, I'd say neither. The 70-300 will give you more bang for your buck.

BTW, changing lenses is neither a sin nor a danger. I change lenses in the middle of herding competitions where dust, fur and wool are flying everywhere. It really isn't an issue with just a modicum of thought.

Its a daytime walk.

Lot's of different opinions so far. Oh BTW let me add an addional wrinkle. I will definitely bring the D300 and if I bring a second body it will be the D5000 with no motor which means it would need to have either the 18-200VR or the 70-300VR which are both AF-S lenses.

Also someone suggested the 80-200 f/2.8 which is a great lens - but it is very heavy without VR, thus that might mean taking a tripod or monopod which I am not sure I want to lug along with two bodies.

Lot's of issues which is why I am looking for input.

Thanks

This is what I'd do!

Think of the kind of images you might want and then take the lens or lenses that will allow you to get them. You don't have to take everything, although that is always a temptation in this hobby. Take what you want and will use and leave the rest at home. Part of the point of a photowalk is the socializing with other photographers. You might find that someone has a lens you don't have and will let you try it out.
