There is a resource out there. Try searching the US Park Police for starters. If I remember where it is for sure, I'll come back and post a link.

thankz Jim Poor - for i have been researching & Ive been hearing this & that & bottom line is i don't know what to actually believe!
I hear that u can use your tripod anywhere but the capital.
is that true?
I did look on the national parks for it requires u to get a permit with each memorial in D.C. which is under the national parks system. & there is an application fee of $50 for each permit plus u have to at least wait 4 business days & i don't have that many days because im leaving tomorrow.
But like i said above i hear that its free to use the tripod anywhere but at the capital.
i don't know what to believe. plus i don't what to spend that much money when we are only going to be at that one memorial for only a few mins or a half hour or less than that.
What would u do?

Mentioned a few things in your other post. But here is a Flickr group to read more about the subject of Photography and DC: Flickr: DC Photo Rights

Quote:
I had a lengthy chat with their public relations person about three weeks ago, and I was told tripods (and, unique for every other location in the entire city, monopods, too) are prohibited in the following parks service areas:

--within the ring of flags of the washington monument
--anywhere on the grounds of the vietnam veterans memorial
--within the jefferson memorial
--on the marble at Lincoln
--EDIT: fifth location, in front of the stars at WWII memorial

She said they are permitted in all other areas.

Alternatively if you can't use your tripod, take a bean bag to settle your camera on somewhere steady? I've never tried it but thought it was good idea when I read about on a dps post somewhere.

It sounds like you found the official answer and are just hoping someone else will tell you what you want to hear.

If you want to play safe, go by what the official policy states. If you want to play fast & loose, take your chances with internet advice and shoot where and how you wish. If you get any grief from the authorities be nice, say you were unclear on the guidelines and put the tripod away.

Another option is an unobtrusive monopod.
