Tripods are a "no" at certain areas, including the Vietnam Wall, inside the circle of flags at the Washington Monument, by the stars at the WWII Monument, and on the Capitol grounds (unless you have a permit from them).

Some of the buildings are pretty large, so a wide angle really works well..

As for the rest, it depends on what you want to take photos of...

I live in the area, so let us know more specifics

Im just wondering why i wouldn't be allowed to take a tripod in those certain areas which u listed above. Would it be ok if i was just carry it( it would be in its case of course) with me all day?
also is the linclon memorial ok to have the tripod at?

For most of the places, it's because it "impedes traffic" and also for the sanctity of the locations, and respect.

For the Capitol, it is to deter commercial photography or some such thing.

You can carry it, but the security guards may/may not get angry if you pull it out to set it up.

If you are planning on walking only around the mall, it is a looong walk during a humid summer day! Plan on water, or a monopod if you have one.

Unless you have a carbon fiber tripod, or making small trips, I would be wary of carrying it that much!

Lincoln, Some people have done shots outside on the steps with tripods, but most are told it is not permitted. INSIDE the memorial, you will probably get tackled by security.
