Why not! You are just customizing your standard zoom lens since you don't need the combo kit. From what I had read, the 18-105 is a good kit lens alternative to the excellent 16-85 VR.

You can add a 70-300 VR later when you need that extra reach.

I have jusrt been reading about this now as am also in the market for a DSLR ... the D90 is a camera on my shortlist with the D60 ... I wondered why the extra lens seemed to cover more bases and also wondered if it's quality would be as good as two lenses covering the same range and a bit more. I will be doing mainly landscapes so will watch this thread with interest other than that cannot help too much sorry !

If you are buying the D90 kit then consider Sigma 10-20 for your landscape work. If you're just buying the D90 body only then the 16-85 VR is a good choice as well.
