refine edges URGENT !

hello.

im part way through following a tutorial, and it has asked me to go "select > refine edge" although i cannot find "refine edge" the magainze says that they use CS4 i only have CS2, could this be something i don't have? if so.. how would i do similar ?

its to change the background on a studio portrait with a pure white background.

could i do the quick mask thing and add to it that way ?
