So I had a point and shoot, then I upgraded to a dslr, which I have been shooting with for over 2 years. Since I have some knowledge of filmphotography I enjoy shooting in Manual, and I like working with PS.
But since I have two young kids and want to take pic's of their activities and everyday life, I sometimes felt that I just wanted to be able to click and not really think about the technicalities behind every shot, ie, capture a moment and not worry about being creative and artistic all the time. So I dug out my point and shoot again and now I start feeling guilty because I know that I can do better than just point and shoot. Am I being lazy? How does the rest of you feel? Are there situations where it's OK to just bring your little pocket camera, or is it, that once you've turned to dslr - there is no turning back? Just curious to see what attitudes are out there, take care!! |

The only time I use aP&S now is when a DSLR isn't allowed, too big, or risks being damaged/destroyed. Otherwise it is always a DSLR

I gotta say I'm really spoiled by my DSLR too. It's really the best of both worlds; just the amount of control I want in ASPM modes, or it can become a really expensive P&S on "auto".

I have a real place for my P&S. When I,m busy and have so many things to do, and carry, it goes in my pocket, and at the press of a button is READY. With todays small cameras, one can get amazingly good pictures. I enjoy my DSLR and it is a much "better"camera, but in my opinion there is a place for both.

I don't have my P&S anymore. I gave it to someone who seemed genuinely interested in photography. Just my little way to help fullfill the joy of photography for others.
So it's all DSLR!

Nothing wrong at all! Who cares what equipment you get -- it's about the photos you get from your equipment! The easy-to-snap candid photos you'll get with your P&S will be better than the photos you don't get with your SLR, which wasn't handy and was too heavy.
As douglas said, there is a place for each, and frankly the camera you use is always better than the camera you don't.

I do not have kids yet, but I think I will shoot with a DSLR when the time comes.

Pen or pencil, using either will give you similar results. Different output but both will record what you are trying to say.
I am going to run a kiddy's camera club later in the year and when I'm out I am using a point n shoot (Fuji A825) as well as my DSLR. What I'm trying to acheive is to get shots that are similar to using the DSLR. Using the various functions on the camera, hopefuly to show the youngsters that you don't need expensive equipment to get a good photo that you are proud of. So yeh, it's fine to use the p 'n' s camera's, and if you think about it you still can be almost just as creative and artistic when using them. Geoff
