If you shoot every thing with standard metering and haven't explored ev compensation yet, I highly urge you to. I am finally able to start seeing things the way a camera meter will, and can tell what the out come is likly to be. Shot about 200 shots at the lake today, and started off with +.7 due to water relections, but by reviewing the histogram every so often, I trusted it and ended up with my best shots coming in at +1 and +1.3. I think center weighting also helped out too.

Highly agree -- exposure compensation is my preferred way to adjust exposure. I highly dislike using full manual mode, because of the extra effort and greater margin for error. Once you've learned how your meter reacts to different types of light, the proper adjustment is just a push-and-click away.
