On the oposite side of the lake you should take a look at Castle Wray - it is a stylized castle with access down to the lakeside which is rare for Windermere & it's FREE.

A trip on the steam gondola on Coniston Water with a visit to Ruskin's house Brantwood - the gondola leaves from Coniston village & drops off / collects at a landing next to Brantwood.

Don't forget to pack a set of ND Graduated filters to make the most of those landscapes.

if i get a shot that looks 1/2 as good as this one i will be over the moon:

as for ND Graduated filters i have never used them before are there any good introduction guides?

all i know about them is they reduce the amount of light so you can use slower shutter speeds with the aim of blurring water

thanks again

ND Graduated filters such as produced by Cokin are used to balance the high light value of the sky with the lower value of the foreground. This narrows the dynamic range of the scence to within the capability of the sensor. Download the info from www.cokin.co.uk/pages/pdf.htm

I would say take more time !! I live near there (very near) and am lost for how many great locations there are. Try Aira force in Ullswater for some small waterfalls be prepared for a climb or two to get some nice angles. Try going up some of the hills for truls spectacular shots of the lakes... Speaking of lakes I found Windermere too busy and too tight (not enough lake accesss) for nice shots so use Ullwater/ Brotherswater and Derwent for those you can reach Ullwater via a direct road the A592 this will also take you past the Brotherswater ... buses avilable if you do not have a car ? can suggest more how long you got ??

thank you that link is amazingly handy, i think i will get a full one and a gradient one :P

we are only going for 1 week if it was up to me and i could afford it i would spend the whole summer there lol, thanks for the locations they look good i cant wait to get shooting.

we are going to windermere as its where the cheapest flat was and close to shops etc but the plan is to have day trips to the other lakes near by in the car and go for walks etc assuming the weathers ok lol

last Q about the filters (for the minute) what are best the circular ones or the square if there is any difference at all

thanks again

The Lake District? Locations? Uhm... just absolutely everywhere as soon as you walk out the door!!! You'll be spoilt for choice and never have to go far before seeing yet another amazing vista, and with british weather, even seeing the same vista under several different lighting conditions (probably all in the same day) will also make for plenty of variety.

Oh, and don't forget to actually enjoy it while you are there. It's a beautiful part of the country.
