That's quite a broad remit

Could you be more specific?

For a general photography book, I've heard nothing but good things about Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson, I believe. I haven't read it personally but from the sounds of it, this book does a very good job about what goes into and makes a picture.

M.J. Langford at Focal Press
Has written good books for at least the last 30 years.

He was a teacher at London Royal Academy of Photography.
I still have 2 books from the 70's, in those 2 books there was almost everything to be learned about photography.

Also some great books from Ansel Adams.

Oups almost forgot about Scott Kelby..has written around 50 books so far.
