Default quick question

hey all i have a quick question for you.
i was wondering what most of you use for your own personal website?
basically what i mean is what site or thingy do you use when you have your own site that you post about yourself and advertise and sell your photos and have your gallery.
im not interested in like a blog, or a blogging website.
the reason im asking is because im trying to find something that i can start like my own website on and be able to show and sell my photos to people!
thanks for the help, and i hope i have not confused you with my rambling!

ok. i have tried wordpress before and im just not that creative when it comes to websites.
i like word press but am i able to make like a page where i have a gallery, then on the gallery page i have different sections for like sports, flowers, people, etc., then you click on the one you want and it opens with a big page of thumbnail pics people can look at?

also i want to be able to have people order pics too.
is there an option for that on wordpress?
or could i have like a paper thing i made and put it up there then people fill in the images they want and the number of images and sizes then they email the doc to me!

any of those possibalitys (sorry im a bad speller)

If you like Wordpress, there are heaps of free templates out there, some specifically for portfolios and photography. Smashing Magazine a huge list of WP templates at http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009...emes-for-2009/ about a third of the way down the page is "Photoblog & Gallery Themes".

From what I've seen, most require you add custom fields to your posts for the thumbnails, but they will all come with documentation and it's easy enough once you get the hang of it.

Cheers

There should be a WP plugin to help you out there, you might have to go hunting for it though.

I'm fairly sure Gallery 2 has cart functionality, it might be an addon as well.

Gallery 2 is very easy to use, my wife prefers it heaps to our WP gallery, I just know my way around custom templating WordPress better, so I tried to take her down that path, she doesn't care how the gallery looks, only how easy the pics are to share with the family.

There should be some instructions in the download and/or on the website you downloaded it from.

Here's some instructions from the WordPress site Using Themes page...

If your theme does not work after following any provided instructions, please contact the theme author for help.

To add a new theme to your WordPress installation, follow these basic steps:

1. Download the theme archive and extract the files it contains. You may need to preserve the directory structure in the archive when extracting these files. Follow the guidelines provided by your theme author.
2. Using an FTP client to access your host web server, create a directory to contain your theme in the wp-content/themes directory provided by WordPress. For example, a theme named Test should be in wp-content/themes/test. Your theme may provide this directory as part of the archive.
3. Upload the theme files to the new directory on your host server.
4. Follow the instructions below for selecting the new theme.

To select the active theme for your site:

1. Log in to the WordPress Administration Panels.
2. Select the Design subpanel, then Themes.
3. From the Available Themes section, click on theme title (or theme screenshot) for the theme you wish to activate.
4. A preview of the theme will be shown to activate theme click the Activate "Theme Name" link in the top right.

Your selection should immediately become active.
The original text from the WP site has links to further info.

Remember a lot of these photoblogs require custom fields added during the post, be sure to read all the instructions that came with template!

Good luck
