Default New England Trip Suggestions

Jen (Wife) and I are going to Boston and New York in a little over a week. She keeps asking me for suggestions on what we should be doing on the trip. So far I have suggested

New York: Shakespeare in the park, walking across the Brooklyn Bridge, Central Park, MOMA

Boston: Museum of Science, Freedom Trail, Paul Revere's House, Arnold Arboretum, a park at the top of Summit Ave, Boston Tea Party Ship.

I am looking for a bunch of stuff to do so that there are plenty of options and not necessarily photography related but fun or interesting stuff to do for a freshly married 32 year old couple. It doesn't have to be tourist stuff either just fun things to do.

Smile New York Sights

Hello Gonzo,

I can't help you with Boston, but my wife and I spent 10 days in New York in very cold February.

We took heaps of photos.

Snow falling on Grand Central. Go inside and take brilliant photos.

We walked the Brooklyn Bridge great scenes of the bridge and city skyline.

Great photos from the park on the Brooklyn side (and even better hot chocolate from a little shop over there as well.

Ditto Staten Island Ferry, can you believe it's free!!!
Statue of Liberty, city skyline, ships and ferries on the harbour.

Some great iconic photos at Wall Street(if you're into Bulls Balls), Central park (horse and buggies) Times square at night, Toys r Us ferris wheel, M&Ms in vibrant colours. Thousands of yellow Taxis.

Have a great time, we did.

Cheers,

John W

In Boston, the Freedom Trail pretty much hits the highlights of the city. Make sure that you go to Fanieul Hall (sp) (pronounced "Fannel") and have a meal at Dick's Last Resort. The wait staff is rude (unless you are sensitive to that) and the food is decent.

Also check out Fenway Park. Even if you aren't a baseball fan, Fenway is the oldest, longest and shortest park in the majors. Tours are available when the team is not playing. You will NOT be able to go onto the field, but you can get onto the Green Monster (left field wall).

While the Arboretum is technically within the city limits of Boston, but it is about 20 minutes south of downtown (about 6 miles as the crow flies). Not a problem if you are driving (drive aggressively or you will not get anywhere), but if not, I think it is accessible from either the Green line or the Orange line (public transportation).

Everything else on your list is easily accessible by public transportation. If you are driving, park you car at the hotel and either walk, or take public trans. You will get there faster, and not spend an hour looking for a place to park and spend $20 each time you park your car.

BTW, I used to work in downtown Boston, and walked everywhere in the city.

I spent a week in new york city a few years ago and there is so much to see. I was doing some missions work with my youth group at the time in the Bronx, and the subway tracks above the roads are pretty cool to look at. The only problem with that is that it is the Bronx .... They do however have the Bronx zoo (which is very very cool).

Other things I would do.....
- Go to the top of the Empire State Building (very very cool scenery from the top)
- Go to times square at night (lots of cool lights and buildings etc)
- Ride the subway (that is one experience I will never forget .... very fun)
- Walk through central park (many cool things to see in there)
- See wall street (many important and cool looking buildings there)

Lots of cool stuff to see. You could wander around all day and not see it all but still have a blast.

One other thing to remember is that if you want to buy souvenirs, buy them from street vendors around times square. They are usually cheaper than other places.

Overall have fun! I had all sorts of fun in new york, and I will not soon forget it.

Talking Great Cities

I'm jealous! Sounds like a great trip...I've lived most of my life in the Northeast (mostly in Maine--it's a shame you won't get up there...I'm a little partial, but it's gorgeous).
NYC is a great city, and there's a ton to do...China Town is a nice stop if you're interested. Central Park is so huge, but it's a nice contrast to all the buildings and such. I agree with taking the Staten Island Ferry--you can see the Statue of Liberty without paying as you pass it, and it's a nice little trip.
Boston is definitely my favorite city...Fennuel Hall is a great stop..try the lobster bisque in a bread bowl (can't remember which food place it's at though...just somewhere in or around the Hall). It's such a clean city too.
Anyway, have fun!

Also in Boston ... Aquarium not amazing, but worth a visit...in Fannuel (sp) Hall there is a bakery shop that has the best brownies ever and if you want to go a bit further up North, Salem MA is always worth a visit. It's a bit overdone with the tourist traps but there are still amazing sites and a whole lot of history.
In NY is also Radio City Music Hall and the place across the street I can't remember the name of where they ice skate in the winter. Only go to Central Park in the daylight !!

Have a great time !

That would be Rockefeller Center, Sue. Did you have a brain fart? LOL!

Boston and NYC are two of my favorite places. When I've got the time and can remember some great stuff to do, I'll post here!

I sure did have a brain fart on that one ! I've only been to NYC once and Rockerfeller Center was about a block and half away from the hotel. It was the first thing we found on our walk the first night we were there. We had no clue where we were or where we were going, ended up in Times Square. Such an amazing time !!

Thanks everyone for the info and suggestions.
I did forget to say that we are going to a Red Sox game, I have the tickets sitting next to me. We are also going to the top of Rockafeller Center. We have heard that there isn't as long of a wait for it when compared to the Empire State Building and that the view is just as good. I think that we will have a great time. We have 8 days until we are there. If anyone else has any other tips, tricks, or information for me before we go?
