Default Focus to infinity

can somebody please help me on how to set my focus to infinity i'm using a nikon d40 with 18-55MM and 55-200MM VR lenses

Just place your focus point on the horizon and autofocus, or set your lens to manual focus and use the distance scale.

Ah, but there's the rub: neither the 18-55 nor the 55-200 HAVE a distance scale

set your focus point on a cloud. That's generally the best. Focus on a cloud, turn AF off, and dont touch the focus ring at the front of the lens.

If you turn the focus ring manually, clockwise rotation (from behind the camera) will push your focal point farther away and counter-clockwise brings it closer.

Hey, you might always want to look into hyperfocal distance. That link is a pretty good basic overview/tutorial. This may be what you're looking for. Extremely useful for street photography, or any time you want to shoot from the hip.
