Default First Drop

Well, almost made it to three years before first big oops. Went to the Oregon coast Mem Day weekend and took along my new Canon EF-S 10-22 to play with. The second day I was pulling my lowepro slingshot from the car to take into the hotel room. I had failed to zip it and when I pulled the bag from the car my Rebel XTi with the 10-22 attached fell out and hit the pavement. It dented the lens cap a little. Camera is fine but the lens I'm not so sure. No physical damage other than the plastic ring around the lens popped in some on the edge, and I can hear a little rattle whe it is zoomed out and I shake it.

Shipped it off to Canon. Waiting to hear the bad news. Man, I had anguished for four months over buying that lens. Had it a week and crash.

I didn't take the time to add it on my insurance before I went on the trip. Stupid me. Yes, i know, I could lie, but then Karma would hit me double and I'd drop my 70-200 in the water or something. I'm just glad it wasn't that lens that dropped. Lesson learned.

The moral here is to always check your zipper.

*Knocks wood*

I haven't dropped any of my camera gear yet, and I never hope to.

I know, I know, I just jinxed myself.

What a bummer! But at least it's getting looked at and possibly fixed if anything is wrong with it.

Last summer on my way home from work I passed some horses and really wanted to get a few shots of them. I rememberd switching my lens and I put my 55-200 lens on top of my car incase I needed to switch it back. When I was done I drove off and it hit me that I left my lens on top of my car!! I was in such a frantic that I drove back and walked up and down the road for a good 2 hours. Finally, I gave up and decided it was long gone. I got back in my car and opened my bag and there it was, sitting in it's nice comfy little spot. Now I make sure that I always put everything back in my bag, even if I think I'll may need to switch it, and check to make sure I have everything before I leave and keep all my zippers closed.

Lucky you! I bet you were frantic while searching. Then so elated once you had given up on it and found it in the bag. Good for you!

What happened was we had stopped at several places and I got tired of opening the bag, pulling my cameras out, shooting, then replacing everything and rezipping. So I strayed from my norm, got sloppy and thus ended up with my new favorite lens in the ER.

I still cannot believe it happened as I am usually so careful, even when my wife is standing there looking at me like I'm the most anal and cautious photographer alive as I'm carefully storing my gear.

Now that I think about it, I almost wish it were my 40D and 70-200 that had fallen out. At least those are insured. But again...lesson learned.

Thought I'd share the happy ending. I got an email from Canon today. They will repair the lens for ONLY 85 dollars, plus tax and shipping for about 104 total. Wow! Am I happy or what? I was afraid I was facing around 300 dollars.

The estimate was quoted as a flat rate repair fee. Not sure if that's standard for all their lenses.

Well, it happened. I was at my charity ride, and while waiting for my time to ride, I was taking photos. Slung my bag over my shoulder to put it in my truck, and my 100-400L lens hits the ground. Lens cap pops off and fortunately, that is the extent of the damage.

Too bad you didn't get a shot of the look on your face as you realized what had just happened. It's not a very good feeling is it? It's one that you have to experience, nothing can describe it.

Man...I feel partially responsible now...sorry about that. I was trying to remind others to be careful.

But that lens is designed to take a pretty good beating. That's why it's so expensive. I'm glad it's OK.
