Question Photography Website

Well, I am making a website through a free website provider so I can share my photos with family and friends. I was wondering what all I should add to it so it looks a little bit more professional. Here is the URL to it so you can check it out so far.

Read the thread in my sig about your web presence for general tips and stuff.

If you want to share photos, I'd recomment just registering a flickr.com account and uploading your shots there!

Hi Mate,

Morts thread is a real corker, check that out and you'll pick up heaps of tips

There's not much you can do to make a free host look professional I'm afraid, the big flashing red advertisment sorts of ruins it. As Morts said, just jump on flickr.

As to how to improve what you have, looking at the code, I'm guessing you've use a template? If so can you change the navigation heading "In This Issue", it's not really relevant, more a newpaper type heading, otherwise try putting a few small photos in the body of the pages.

Cheers

I found that other people can download your images original size on flickr having a webs page you can only download low res images, and being free is great too.
I have built a few,
my own:
tjphoto.webs.com
myveryownweddingwebsite.webs.com
tranquilweddings.webs.com
Friends:
whelan1.webs.com
sarazata.webs.com
Takes a while for it to get listed on directory's that sort of thing, but you just link em up!
Great job very neat!
You can link utube, blogs, photobucket, and web annimations facebook ectt...list goes on

Alright. *web-nazi hat*

What is the prupose of the website? Is it just a place for your to dump images, is it a portfolio, is it a client-oriented website, etc? This determines alot of things. From here on in, im assuming this is a portfolio to showcase your work.

Ads: NO. If youre making a portfolio, there are tons of low-cost stand-alone website options you can use. You do NOT want ads on your portfolio.

Design: Im going to assume this is a pre-designed thing you got from your host, and it's okay. A bit muted and boring, but well put together, as it should be. The only thing, though, is that it expresses very little about you, about your style and so on.

About Me page: copy is fine, but could use some editing/spicing up.

Gallery: there's a lack of images, but I'll attribute that to being new. That being said, however, once i get into an "album", the thumbnails are TINY. So tiny as to be useless. Slideshow works well, but I suspect its part of the .webs system. Its kinda weird to have a slideshow for only 6 images, too. I'd think maybe have it before you get into the album proper and have it display ALL your images from ALL your albums

Gear page: no. Remove it. Nobody needs to know what gear youre using. And, no offense meant, but 1 body and 2 lenses are not "an arsenal". Some editing in the copy, for sure.

All in all a good starter, but it needs a direction and purpose.

Thank you for your input. I am not done uploading images, and that being said, I don't have many, because I am still just starting out and learning things. But ounce again thatnks a lot for your feedback. It was extremly helpful. Do you have any suggestions on more pages that may be nessasary that I could add?

I think you need to flesh out what the site is for first. its still very ambiguous to me. Other than that, just expand on what you have: Home page, gallery, about me. That's all.

What do you mean by ambiguous?

Not quite - Nobody has access to you original size of you set it right. If you upload images of 1024px or more on the larger side people will be able to get a "large size" of 1024 but not the original. However just like your own hosted web site people can only download what you upload. Just upload low res copies of your files to flickr in the same way you would to your own site.

If it really is just to show family and friends there is a huge benefit to being on a service like flickr etc. Makes life so much easier.
