I apologise if i have broken some unwritten law with regards to praising external HDD, but i can honestly say they have always been extremely reliable to me. Far more so than memory cards and discs.
No need for apologies and I'm sorry if I have offended you. I should have said IMHO relying solely on EHDs is a bad idea. Like I said it's a little like Russian Roulette, they can be dropped, spilled on, stolen, unplugged wrong or simply just fail for no apparent reason at all. It's not if they fail it is when. Me personally I'm not comfortable with that. The OP seems fairly new to EHDs so I thought I'd provide a flip side.

Don't worry no offense caused yeah i know where your coming from, and i assume i must have just been very lucky. I suppose everyone has their preferences. One other advantage to EHD is the size of them in comparison to their storage capacity. 250GB worth of DVDs would take up a significant amount of space, where as the EHD i linked to before is tiny and weighs 3 ounces.

Sounds to me like hi-def video might be more suited to your needs. Then, when you get home, you can pick individual frames for your images.

Just been away on holiday in North Wales for 10 days - here are the stats

1580 raw images transfered to laptop each evening - total disk space 19.2 Gig

The advantage of taking a laptop is that you can review yours shots & even return the following day to do better.

Oooo, this thread is making me nervous! Myself, my husband, my sister and her boyfriend are going to the US for almost 4 weeks in November. (LA, San Francisco, Ney York, Orlando, Miami, LA) I have an EHD (500g) an 8g and 1g card... but I think im going to stock up on a few more 4g cards I'd really rather not have to upload my photos every evening - probably something ill do every second evening, in fact I dont think i'll see much of my hotel at all while im in New York!

I have the same concerns as you Praline. How much is too much, how much is enough! How can I make sure im not spending most of my time uploading photos! haha.

If you're worried about carrying your equiptment with you comfort wise, I bought a Crumpler 6 million dollar home, and it is UNBELIEVABLY comfortable! Its a satchel that doesnt look at all like a camera bag, with a padded strap you can adjust. It fits everything, and its really cute! (My last camera bag was uncomfortable, ugly and obvious!) Heres the link: http://www.crumplerbags.com/Lite/Eng...--MD0709A.html

Have a great trip Praline! Im headed to Disneyworld for the first time, so would absolutely love to see your photos and ask you a few questions when you get back!

Also you should ask "How many camera batteries should I take?"

You can buy memory cards on almost any corner but you certainly can't say the same about your camera batteries. (Unless your camera uses AA or AAA or something common like that.)

And you will need your battery charger as well!

I was stationed in Japan back in the late 60s and have been thinking like you - what do I take? In my case I'll be there for a couple *months*!
