Sorry I am new to this so If I am asking this question in the wrong place please point me in the right direction! I am trying my hardest to take a picture with a subject as a focal point and the background out of focus, I have adjusted the aperture to f 2.8 and the background is still crisp, is there other steps I should be taking?

@ jcrams

Try shooting at a longer focal length and/or have the subject close to you and the background as far away as possible. .
It you are using a point & shoot camera it can be very difficult to get out of focus backgrounds, except for extreme close up.

@ taz05

Pentaprisms are the current optimal solution to getting light out trough the eyepiecs.

penta-mirrors are a cheaper solution. (general not quite as bright)

At least in the Canon range the penta prism models are the "better" cameras albeit more expensive.

I'm embarrassed to admit this is the first time I've read this great post. This is more geared towards the landscape forums:

What kind of tripod should I buy?

Thinking about a new tripod
First time tripod buyer please help
"help" tripod purchase?
Tripod for Nikon D5000
Which tripod head?
Manfrotto or Gitzo
Yet another tripod topic:)
Tripod question
Tripod - Grip/Ball Heads

monopod recommendations

Like sk66, that search engine never works for me either. I think I got as far as about page 35 of the Other Digital Photography Gear forum. Me sleep now.

Default Low Key

I have to do an assignment for Low Key. I'm looking for tips. I did a search, I dug though this post. I'm quite sure it's in here I'm just looking in the wrong places. Can you point me in the right direction?
