I got that book about 6 months ago

Thanks for this, I'm sure a lot of the questions I need / will need to ask as a complete beginner will already be covered here.
But I will apologise now if I ask a dumb question that has already been answered. As a complete novice, there are times when I actually don't know the correct question to ask to get the answer to my problem. This is where a google search can be totally useless and a massive source of frustration. Sometimes it takes someone of greater knowledge or experience to define what the real question is by reading between the lines or having some interaction back and forward, and this can be a godsend to people in my position.
This site has already been a major source of info for me, as well as an extremely enjoyable one, and I am positive it will continue to be so for a very long time to come, and I promise to try and use the search feature before asking.

Why is this thread no longer sticky? It's much, much to valuable to be lost in the depths of the forum!

UPDATE: Thanks for making it a sticky again!

Great info! I especially like the one about the UV filter. I started thinking of why someone would put a gun to my head and make me use a UV filter and I decided that it would be to prevent the people in my pictures from getting skin cancer.
