Default Wondering will my point and shoot do?

Hi Everyone,

I recently brought an advanced point and shoot and was wondering is it possible to do a wedding with such a camera or photo shoot with models with this type of camera. I want to work on building a portfolio, and wait a while before I go out and purchase another camera since this one is only four months old... The camera that I brought was a Sony DSC-H50. Any and all input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Short answer:

You can do whatever you like: weddings, models, etc., but you will have a lot of trouble.

However, point and shoots have a number of extremely important limitations when it comes to these. One of the biggest is the inability to use external flashes or lighting, which are essential for high quality posed portraits. There are many others -- but you should definitely read around a bit more. Read articles on wedding photography, portraits, etc. and see what sort of equipment is used, and most importantly: why.

P & S's are basically good for well......let's say not for weddings, sporting events, modeling, anything that requires action. But they are good for candid shots, landscape and anything that doesn't move too fast.

I used my point and shoot for the first few weddings I did, and it turned out ok. Not great, certainly not "professional", but the people that hired me weren't expecting professional work. They had seen the work I had done with my P&S, and that's the quality they expected. Of course, several of those weddings I did for free, and you can't ask much of someone you aren't paying. If you're not expecting to be a professional, I'd say you're ok, but now that I have a DSLR (finally!) I would never use my P&S at a wedding unless the DSLR exploded or something.

That's right, P&S's never work with light of any kind. They use X-Rays.
