Question Battery options for old SLR cameras

My Grandmother gave me a camera before she passed, it was one of her favorites to shoot with. It's a Yashica Electro 35. My problem is, the batteries are discontinued because they were mercury. Would anyone out there know if there's a way to make the "new" batteries work with this "old" camera? I can't afford to buy a DSLR so this SLR is what I want to use to get used to all the controls and settings. If I can master the old ways, the new ways won't be so hard, right?
Please help!
Thanks!
Caroline

Wow..that's a relic. I remember those while growing up in Japan. It's at least 30 plus years old. Try doing a google search for camera batteries. I know there are some stores out there that just specialize in batteries.

"you can use a 6v PX28A (aka 4LR44) alkaline battery which is readily available at any Walgreens or Radio Shack. The Yashicas can handle the slightly higher voltage without any difficulty. The smaller PX28As last about a year of heavy use in my experience. The GSNs have a built in battery check feature which is very handy."

I found the same page/information. It seems to be the common solution. Google search Yashica Electro 35, there's alot of information out there, even a Flickr group.
