I recently joined another photography/modeling related site (to remain nameless) in hopes of meeting new people and expanding my portfolio. In the 2 days I've been on there I've seen more insults than valuable information. Forum newbies are treated like they're no-talent idiots, and get jumped all over constantly.
It makes me appreciate DPS so much more! Not only does everyone here know how to be polite, but you are all so helpful to EVERYONE, new or old, experienced or amateur. Here's an actual post from the site (and a tame one at that): NAMELESS PERSON wrote: "From OP's profile: My major professional instruments are: Nikon D40 and Adobe Photoshop. My expert level of utilizing Adobe Systems software fully eliminates any need in tons of hardware equipment and makes me extremely flexible. ******************* good point - I am going to research the latest in $100 P&S and get CS 4 because I want my clients to think I'm a Pro too." Such condescending words would never be spoken here, and I love you all for it!

Actually, I was more upset by this part: "good point - I am going to research the latest in $100 P&S and get CS 4 because I want my clients to think I'm a Pro too."
If there's ANYTHING I've learned here (I've learned lots actually) it's that the equipment does not make the artist, the art does! I starting my career with a 110mm (remember those little cartridge thingies??) and look where I am today? We all start somewhere, and that poster acted as if she were born with a DSL in her hands.

Nope, she was making a personal attack on the OP (the original poster), not even based on what his post was about, but something from his profile. It's sad, I thought I had just logged in on a bad day, but now I see they're usually that rude over there.

What site was it? I think I have a pretty good idea. But yeah there are a lot of different forums out there that are like that. This is truely one of the only forums that I post on that they do not blast you for being a noob. And people here actually try to offer helpful advice.

Most internet forums I have experienced over the years tend to be like that, regardless of purpose. I pretty much stopped joining them as it can become so tiring and frustrating to be met with elitist sarcasm or belittlement no matter how you try to avoid it.
What stood out for me on DPS when lurking prior to joining, was the lack of ego and the sincerity and friendliness of all concerned. Pro's offering advice to newbies such as myself, without the slightest hint of patronising and likewise, newbies being comfortable enough to ask questions and post their pics for their peers to see, without fear of being put down. Possibly due to the anonymity offered by the internet, posting without fear of recompense, in my experience has become a very rare thing indeed. You guys have nurtured and created something very special here, if you don't mind me saying so. I feel that I have discovered an Oasis of congeniality amid a desert of one-upmanship. (Wow, profound or what? Oscar Wilde eat your heart out........Actually, I better go lie down incase I injured myself ).

There are far too many forums on the internet where civility is at a premium. I've been a member of the Fender Discussion Pages for several years because the owner/moderator runs a tight ship and won't tolerate overly rude remarks or flame wars.
That said, it's also why I appreciate this forum. The people here are polite and helpful. I also notice that the moderators don't tolerate rude, boorish behavior. So I'm sticking around for awhile. Who you callin' an oxymoron?
