...depends on how much you're willing to spend
for US$100 you could get a 50mm f/1.8 (wont autofocus) for US$200 you could get a 35mm f/1.8 (not sure if it will autofocus.. it might i think its a "G")or for $2k (roughly) you could get a 24-70 f/2.8 or a 70-200 f/2.8 (these will autofocus)

"G" lenses have nothing to do with autofocusing -- "G" just means no aperture ring (which is useless on digital cameras anyhow). The only relevant term for you is AF-S, which is the only kind of lens that will autofocus on your D40 (yes, AI-S also will do so, but those are old and ultra-expensive).
I highly recommend the new shiny $200 f/1.8 35mm -- it's AF-S (will autofocus on your D40), is "normal" (has about the same field of view as the human eye), and is pretty fast (to help in low light situations).

I got a 50mm old film lens f/1.4. It is so sharp, and awesome. And it won't auto focus or auto meter. It is a real good way to learn how to do everything manually. But it takes the best photos. I found it used for $75. But they go for $350+ new.
The F1.4 body is metal where the F1.8 body is plastic, that's real difference in price.
