even easier now with the Nikon D5000 you can live view and flip out the screen to shoot around corners. dont even need to stick your hand out from around a corner.

Nine times out of ten I'll have a small .380 in my back pocket, but have never had reason to use it, and hope I never do.

Jim.....you should write a book. I'd buy it. Or just do a photog book.

Tim Page's book titled NAM has always been one of my all time favorites. I'd love to have heard some of his stories.

Because of various injuries I've suffered throughout my career, busted right knee, broken left wrist, broken right hand, left shoulder and collar bone and a few too many concussions, I like my gitzo monopod, it can extend out into a spear, sort of

I've been starting to allow strangers to be in the picture, generally at a distance, usually not looking towards me, and not one has paid any attention. I think that's how you'd start. Just going to public parks and streets, taking pictures generally, and shifting so the people start turning up in the images, more props in the scene than subjects. Eventually you'll start letting them be the subject as you learn the boundaries and how many pictures you can take before they start looking at you with that forbidding look people use before they start taking action. "hey, when I stare, people tell me to take a picture, so instead of staring, I'm taking pictures. If you'd rather I just sat and stared at your beautiful self...?"
LOL
I'm not afraid of physical assault, just negative confrontation on any level.

I want to do candid photos of strangers in public, but before i do, i want to hear experiences from others. How did the people react when you took their photo?

I am not going to be selling the photos, just for personal use, to gain experience.
When taking pictures of average people, I get mixed reactions.... (partly because in this day and age everyone is paranoid about ending up photoshopped in some porn experiment on the internet...) others simply dont care (if they even realize)

the tricky part though, is when you find a kid doing something truly photo worthy, you are almost looked at as the future candidate for America's Most Wanted because everyone is so overprotective of their children (with GOOD reason)

I try to take pictures at friends little league games, etc... that way if there are any truly concerned parents, my friends (parents themselves) can validate what I am doing...
