I just bought a sound trigguer kit and the adapter for the flash. If anyone has any experience taking high speed photos using a sound trigger, I would appreciate any tips. (specially settings, ISO, etc)
The kit and the adapter cost me under $50. Not a bad deal to experiment with high speed photo. |

Make sure your room is dark so that you can leave the shutter open. You can then simply expose for the flash and do a few test shots. It's not much different than a regular flash photo, except that you'll have to make sure that the ambient doesn't play too big a role.
As for actual settings, I'd set everything to manual, ISO 100, shutter speed that's long enough to do whatever you need to get on the photo. If you're experimenting with popping a baloon a second should be long enough. You should then balance the ambient light that's left with your aperture. Take a photo at maximum open aperture, and if it's too bright close the aperture down a stop until you get it dark enough. Once you've determined the aperture you can hook up your flash and set its power to whatever works. By the way, where did you get the kit?

I've been toying with trying to figure out how to make one from some directions I found on a website, but I'm not 100% on my skills on that... I'm sure I could figure it out, I'd just be afraid of frying my flash if I get it wrong

i'll do that,
i havn't been actively searching but i havn't seen anything here in my general browsing. i also saw the DIY sound trigger somewhere.. either Strobist or DPS.. but me and electronics dont mix. ![]() as you say.. i'm not THAT keen to fry my baby ![]() however, i have developed a highly sophisticated maintenance method that works on the majority of electronics.. i call it "Percussive Maintenance". nothing like a drop-kick to get a calculator working again

I don't see how you'd fry your flash. The only thing the kit has to do is to create a connection between the middle pin and the foot of the flash. Usually the circuit that does that is well separated from the rest of the electronics to prevent the flash from frying the kit itself!

Sound Flash Trigger kit can be purchased here:
http://hiviz.com/kits/products.htm For an additional $20.00 they will assemble it. Unfortunately I didn't realized they would do that, so I ordered mine unassembled and I now I have to do it myself, although it doesn't seem complicated. I ordered kit # SK2-DU-BB which comes with a delay unit They also have light flash trigger for those who want to experiment with shooting the flash when a light bean is interrupted. Finally, if you don't have one yet, you would need a PC to Hot Shoe Adapter. You can purchase one here for around $13.00 |

Thanks, I'm actually considering buying one of those. Assembly shouldn't be a problem, and my flash (580EX-II) has a PC connection, so that's easy as well.
