Nice shot, Russ. I have nothing to offer. Pinhole photography is one of those things on my list to try someday, but I haven't got there yet.

Thanks, Linda. I guess this topic is a bit out there for most shooting digital these days. Well, I didn't manage to shoot a pinhole on the 26th, but I'm still going to get a roll through the Diana+ soon.

If you want some inspiration, check out the amazing work of Zeb Andrews. He takes better pictures without a lens than I've ever taken. It's actually quite a humbling photostream! (I particularly love the Portland Pinscapes set, but all are wonderful).

Has anyone heard of Abe Morell? He uses the Pin Hole technique in a really cool way. In many of his photos he turns an entire room into a pinhole camera, then photographs the in reflected image over the furnature in the room.

You can check out his website here:

and here's a direct link to the gallery:

Very cool stuff.

I tried, but my shots were all blurry. Does that mean the hole was too large? It did have nice color.

The only stupid question is the one that is never asked, except maybe “Don’t you think it is about time you audited my return?”

Probably, yes. The holes need to be VERY small. The one that I usually use is estimated at around f/150, and there are many who use smaller.

Mr. Pinhole is a very bare-bones site that has lots of calculators for deciding these things.

Jason -- check out Zeb's photostream for some amazing examples (link in my last reply). Pinhole is essentially shooting without a lens onto any type of sensor (i.e. film or digital, although film is the classic choice). This works because you're focusing the light through a very small hole, which gives you no lens distortion (because there isn't one) and infinite depth of field. The images are a tad soft and dreamy looking, which makes for a wonderful effect. Exposure times are long (seconds to minutes), so a tripod is a must! See the Photojojo link in my original post for lots more info.
