Default Kentucky Derby

Hello ya'll! I haven't been a member very long, but was looking for some info. I will be attending my first Kentucky Derby on May 2nd was wondering if any of the great photographers on this site had ever been.
If so could u please relate the best places to get pictures of the races. I will have infield tickets and I know that it will be crowded, but any kind of knowledge or hints would be GREATLY appreciated. thanks so much!!!!!

Louisville is an awesome city, as well as New Albany across the river, I live there.

Derby is one crazy event. We kicked off Derby Festival on the 18th with "Thunder over Louisville" Now that is one crazy event. Google it or check it out in Flickr. Lotsa great photo opportunities.

Are you from Louisville?

no I am from Saint Louis. We have friends in Louisville. Went to "thunder" last year got a couple of real good shots of fireworks. Best display of gunpowder I have ever seen.

What were you hoping to photograph from the infield? Imagine go to a bar, with no stage, to watch, say, The Rolling Stones. This concert has been well advertised. Now imagine them taking the stage 6 hours after the doors open (and liquor sales starts). If you did not get to the front of the crowd, and stay there, the only things you are likely to see are more patrons, drunk patrons. I suggest you think long and hard before taking a camera about which you care into that environment. If you are hoping/expecting candid people photos, you will have numerous chances.

Good luck, and have fun.
