Small trivial note, but if you just need a quick visual clue, if the lens has an aperture ring, it's not an EOS-mount lens.

Are you telling me that none of Canon's autofocus lenses have aperture rings. I never noticed that. Maybe this is why all the Nikonians are so annoyed by the newer G-type lenses (they lack aperture rings). They're afraid of becoming more like Canon.

Yup. Canonites have gotten by without aperture rings for about twenty years, now. Nice to hear Nikon's catching up.

The thing you'll note is that most of the G-type lenses are also DX. Chances are good you aren't planning on putting your DX lenses onto film bodies that need aperture rings...

Yeah, most are. But when they started taking the aperture ring off of pro lenses like the new 70-200mm AF-S and 24-70mm AF-S, people started getting riled up. Maybe a lot of pros are still want compatibility with their FM3a's. Or maybe people just like to whine

Definitely--removal of a feature, whether you need it or not, always feels vaguely like a ripoff (my Nikonian photo-geeking friend still froths whenever the words "interchangable focus screen" are mentioned--his lowliest of lowly film cams had 'em, his D700 doesn't). And when it's a feature you've had for decades and relied upon for most of those decades, I can see why some folks are grumbling. I have to say that I adore having aperture rings when I adapt an old MF lens for my XT, because there is no other way to control the aperture. You should see the crazy stuff that goes on when it comes to adapting G lenses to the EOS mount to get aperture control back (mostly, it's the 14-24 for 1DsIII owners).
