Default What photo-sharing site to choose?

I'm pleased to have found DPS. I had been checking it out for a few days. I have finally registered! I would appreciate any feedback concerning photo-sites I should consider to use to post my photos to the DPS Forum.

The most common and easy answer is flickr -- grab a free account, and you're set!

Agreed. Flickr is the best place to showcase your pictures. It's free for the first 200 pictures. $24/year gives you access to collections and infinite image and video uploads. I'd worry about filling up the first 200 pictures before making any monetary jump though.

Another option if you have (or are thinking of getting) your own webhost/domain is to install your own web gallery. There are often several to choose from (Gallery, Coppermine, Pixelpost, Zenphoto, and 4Images to name a few) and often the host automates the initial setup.

The advantages; they are yours free and clear to customize and do with what you want and the number of images allowed is limited only by the amount HD space that's part of your hosting plan.

The disadvantage is that traffic to them is likely to be limited by how much you spread the word that they're out there. In other words, someone just surfing photos is unlikely to just stumble upon them.

Since when do they have a limit? AFAIK they limit free accounts to 200 MB/month, not to any fixed number of photos.

I had to upgrade to pro because at 170 images it said it would keep all of my images, but only show the newest 200. I could keep uploading more for free, but only I would be able to see the old images once the number went higher than 200.I wanted to have open access to all of my pictures, so I paid. Since I'm coming up to 300 and some of my first are still being looked at, I thought it was an ok idea to pay.

That's new to me. Then again, €20,- per year is a very low price for the service they provide.

Once you join flickr, get involved in groups and gain contacts. You will be amazed at the traffic you get, and its very interesting to see what photos get the most attention.

There's a 200 (visible) photos limit and 100 MB/month uploading limit.
