Default if you had 200-300 us$?

Would you go ahead and

buy cyber syncs and a flash for on camera or,
buy cheaper flash units and umbrellas with opticals or,
buy on camera flash and cheaper flash and one umbrella?

I'm leaning towards the cyber syncs and a flash for on camera. I plan on doing the strobist thing. (But I would also like to use the at least one speedlight on camera, sometimes, for convenience.) So I plan on buying the umbrellas and stands as well as some more speedlights.

Please help me get out of this vapor lock. I'm locked up with all the possibilities. I'm afraid if I don't buy the cyber syncs now I'm going to be tempted to buy ebay triggers only to later regret spending money on them.

Opinions, thoughts, cake? or random pictures of cats?

thanks.

I'm getting ready to get the 85. Don't know if I'm going to go all out with the 1.4 yet though.

Also, I've got that in a different sink fund. Lenses fall into a different budget category.

I just happened to win the NCAA bracket at work and got an extra 200$us I can squeeze out the extra 100 without much repercussion from the wife.

By the way, how do you like the Tamron 28-75? I've looked at this lens many times.

well if youhave your heart set on a flash...
i'd buy sb600 with umbrella and stand THAT is one purchase i'll never regret.
off camera flash that doubles for on camera.. brilliant

I'm making the most of the built in Nikon optical triggering system.. i'm going to use the optical triggering until my situation necessitates I get something like PW's for reliable triggering.
i've never had a major issue with the optical triggering,.. you can always add a PW/cyberSync if your style doesnt fit with the opticals strengths.
(where theres a wil theres a way)

my next purchase will probably be another sb600 with stand+brolly/softbox.
sure the optical triggering falls over in bright places or if too obscured.. but i still love mine.

OR..
onto lenses.. the 85 is a nice lens, good choice,
but a zoom lens might serve you well too, seeing as you've got just the prime (from your signature)
so chasing your little son around the house will be a bit easier getting the framing right.

70-300 (non VR non ED) is good buying. i know.. i just got a second hand one.
its not sharp, but 300mm is 300mm baby.
They are very cheap now. (my local rates are roughly US$120 for a new one)

18-135 it is sharper, also a good lens.
i wouldnt go on holiday without it (perfect for landsacpe/daily family shots.)
