Default Not sure what to shoot in

and am not sure if I am posting in the right place.

I want to take some pregnancy shots of a friend of mine if I can this weekend. I have one friend telling me to shoot in RAW but I always shoot in JPEG.
Should I shoot in RAW+Jpeg? Or what?
I haven't used RAW yet and I have issues opening it on the computer. Can I always just turn around and save it as a jpeg? What should I do?

Well...unless you have CS3 or higher, or software to open RAW images on the computer then shoot the way you're comfortable. remember half the battle is making it easy on yourself and developing a basic workflow. My motto is KISS! (Keep it simple stupid). Sometimes one forgets and just goes about making things harder on themselves.

My question to you - Why do you want to shoot in RAW?

I trust you are aware what a RAW image is? Are you prepared to do the PP? Do you enjoy doing that sort of thing, PP? Are you comfortable doing PP?

You say you have issues opening RAW on your computer. May I ask what software you use? Did any software come with the camera?

I use Lightroom 2, but a lot of cameras now come with software for processing the RAW images.

All things to consider. There's nothing wrong with shooting Jpeg, you can still do PP.

I need to buy PS CS3. I stopped using the version I have because it was not bought by me, therefore I felt bad and guilty.

So right now I am using Gimp. I do not like it. I much prefer CS3.

I prefer to shoot in Jpeg but I have a friend who is a better photographer then I am and he told me to shoot in RAW. But if you get the shot right the first time you really shouldn't need much PP right??

He told me more professionals use GIMP then PS CS3. I hate Gimp though. I am debating on a new lens too. I want the longer lens but he is telling me to get the 50mm manual focus. I just am not comfortable with manual yet.

Nope...........more pros use CS, it's the industry standard. Out of all the photographers I know, nobody uses gimp, I never heard of it, before coming to DPS. You need to follow your heart and mind and not the advice of your friend.

yeah I don't like Gimp. I showed him a copy online of CS that I found for $120 but he kind of shot it down so I don't know if it is a legit copy or not.

Can your camera do both? Most can do jpeg and raw at the same time. This may help.

yep it can do both but it takes up a lot of room. I am just going to shoot in jpeg. It is what I know.
