Lightbulb news: digital SLR video by Canon

Q&A: Canon helps usher in the video SLR era
Quote:
The camera industry and photographers, having just gotten accustomed to the arrival of video in point-and-shoot cameras, just now are beginning to grapple with its arrival in the more serious SLR realm.
Chuck Westfall, technical adviser for Canon's professional products marketing division and a 26-year veteran at the Japanese company, is in the thick of it. Nikon was the first to market with a single-lens reflex camera equipped with video, the D90, but Canon offers video in two SLRs: the high-end EOS 5D Mark II, with a large sensor the size of a full frame of 35mm film, and the Rebel T1i, a more affordable, mainstream model.

That's Canon way of saying 'run along and plays with Video' and forgets the outdated focusing system.

How true!!!!!!!! I look at this new technology of having a camera do both (video and still capture) as more things to break and have to shell out the $$$$ to repair. So, I guess where someone purchases one, they will start posting threads on "How to start a professional Videographer business

Personally, I have wondered if we shouldn't have a video section to this site, either videos made from digital cameras or videos using photos (time-lapse videos for example).

I know that I just bought a Kodak V1073 merely for the video aspect. It does 1280x720 (16:9) videos @ 30fps which would make it HD in that it's 720P.

Most of what I do ends up in an .mov now, whether still or motion. So I'm totally with you there.

Having the ability to do motion and stills in the same piece of equipment is unbelievably better than trying to cart around a still camera with accessories and video gear. Saying it's more stuff to break is a bit misleading, since having video gear gives you just as much, if not even more stuff to break. Most of it is in the software, so it doesn't really add mechanical complexity to the camera. Not to mention the exponentially better image quality compared to the under-$25,000 video crowd.

When I do go out with full gear, the MiniDV camcorder always go with and it's come in handy. When I had the Casio EX-Z80 (another camera I bought strictly for video purposes), I compared that widescreen video against minidv and the difference was not great enough to justify lugging around a minidv camcorder, then capturing the video via firewire. With cameras that can do HD, it's straight from the memory card into an editing program or youtube.

I know that the 5D Mark II does have a stereo microphone input, which is a HUGE bonus being that practically ALL digital cameras have inferior mono mics.

Here's a write-up BHPhoto did on it just a month or so ago...
