Default just curious - shutter noise

I'm curious if there is something I'm not setting right.

I have a canon XS - and when you "click to take a picture" you can hear the shutter - cluck cluck - its pretty loud in my opionon.

My previous camera - was not a dslr - it was a fuji S5100 - and it had an option to "turn shutter noise off" or something close to that - so that when you clicked - it was silent.

I've scanned through the index/and chapter listings in the instruction book - and did a minor google search - but didn't come up with anything.

I shoot mostly my kids and their sporting events - so I guess the noise isn't so bad - and maybe it just seems loud to me. But i swear sitting in the stands shooting a basketball game - I feel like everyone can hear me take every picture and is staring at me!!

so - just wondering if there is a way to make it quieter.

thanks

You could wrap your camera in a towel, but that'd make it kind of hard to, you know, shoot.

Unfortunately, there's not a way to make the XS or the XTi quieter; you have to go to the XXD series for that. If it's any consolation, the XS' native shutter noise is a muffled echo of what the earlier XXDs like the 20 did! Since you're mostly shooting sports I wouldn't worry about it as long as Tiger Woods isn't within range.

And if the others are staring at you, it's probably camera and/or lens envy.

On a point and shoot there's not much mechanical activity going on, just a quick slide of a door and a very small one at that. So the noise is minimal, even non-existant, and the camera shutter noise is an artificial digital noise made via the beep speaker. That means it can be turned off. On a DSLR there's actually quite a bit of activity going on mechanically with the mirror lifting and two doors opening front and back of each other. This means the noise is not a fake thing created for human comfort, but an actual sound created by action. It's unlikely therefor that it's something you can turn off. If you can't find it in the main camera settings, it's not likely there.

The noise that you hear is not artificial. It's the actual sound of the mirrors moving and the shutter operating. Mirrors go up, the first shutter curtain comes down, the second shutter curtain comes down, mirrors go down and the shutter is "cocked" (brought back up ready for the next shot).

Using Live View can change the noise somewhat, depending on the AF mode (Quick mode, Live mode, or manual focus). Ditto for mirror lock-up. But in the end it's still not going to be quiet.

SLR photography is noisy. Film SLRs often are fitted with an autowinder as well, producing a loud whine after each photo in addition to the mirror and shutter sounds of the picture-taking.

thank you everyone for the feedback -

Guess I just didn't realize when playing in the camera store - how loud to me it would sound later. I love the camera though - so I will just get over it

Keep in mind it sounds louder to you because you have your face up to the camera, thus your ear relatively close to it. I've taken shots with my Canon 450D in my neice's bedroom when she's only been asleep for a few minutes, and she hasn't stirred.
