Default Vacation time!! Which lens do you carry to holidays?

Hi All,

Summer is around the corner, and many people will start planning on the trips and what places they want to see and photograph.

With a spouse around (which many will have) , you'll have limited time to wonder around and shoot.

I think people will start considering carrying one lens only for that purpose to save time...

So, which is yours??

I'll take my Canon 18-200 f/3.5-5.6 IS, Or I'll buy the L lens and save myself from carrying a tripod

I would never consider carrying one lens only, my entire ensemble goes with me. Time isn't limited in any way. We sight see together, we visit interesting places and such, and the camera gear goes every where too.

If anything, I think the wife would be upset if I didn't spend some time getting good photos of everything. If it means spending more time in one place, so be it.

Also, not sure what your meaning is by this -

The quality of the lens souldn't have any bearing on using a tripod or not. Stability is crucial for good shots imho.

Hahah a spouse that tells me how much time I have to go shoot in an alternate Universe maybe Only one lens, nope not me either. I have a wonderful waterproof backpack that fits everything including my tripod and that is what goes with me on all my trips, treks and simple jaunts across town !

I meant an L lens with big aperture (f/4 or f/2.8) like 24-70 L f/2.8 or 24-105 L f/4

For "walkabouts" I'll generally carry my 18-200 and my 10-20...maybe a 2x as well, possibly a flash...for absolute minimum it's the 18-200.
I carried my 18-200 my 50-500 (HEAVY) and monopod to the top of the great wall....only to find it too hazy to get any great scenics up there... But the 18-200 got many good pics along the way...
I have better lenses, but for versatility/speed a zoom is hard to beat.

I carry the 16-35mm and 70-200mm attached to two cameras.

That's always been a tough decision for me because I like to travel light but I always want to take everything lens I own . Last time I took my Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 plus the Canon 70-200 f/4 and 50 f/1.4 and left my Canon 17-55 f/2.8IS at home. Although I used the 2 Canon lenses, the Tamron was on my camera virtually all the time.

Simple answer, I wouldn't leave home for vacation without every single lens i have, as a matter of fact, it gets packed first .

Hey, if youre Ken Rockwell, the ideal would be not having a camera at all! (link)

I usually take everything with me, but that may change. Im switching out my 18-200 for a 70-300, so it'll HAVE to all come

I specifically bought my Nikon 18-200 VR after a couple of painful trips in which I either had to cart around a bunch of lenses, or brought only one lens and wished I had more focal lengths available. Now whenever I travel for non-photographic purposes (I'm a mathematician, so I'm often at seminars, conferences, etc.), I bring just the 18-200 and call it good. It saves me a LOT of pain, and the lens offers a ton of flexibility. Totally worth it.
