Default Poor Search Engine & Posting

If you stay logged into the system any new posts are lost when you log out, even though you may not have read them. This is wrong, only posts you have read should be flagged as such. Just because you are logged in does not mean you are reading all the messages.

The Search Engine does not work correctly. I have raised this before. Almost every search requires that you enter a keyword and or a user id, even if you don't have a keyword or user id. A simple search like find all posts for yesterday that have more than one reply results in an error if no search word or user id is given.

At best the post tracking capabilities of the system are poor and make the system cumbersome to work with, and also show a lack of skill on behalf of the developers. Sorry, but with 20 odd years doing this stuff I find it poor when basic services are not right. Generally shows that an IT related job has been undertaken by non IT related persons.

The keyword search also has a problem. from what I can gather it ignores words of 3 or less characters but does not tell you this. Do a search for "raw" in the title or post and it will come back saying there are no posts. One of the most posted subjects and yet it cannot be found!!!!!!!!!!!!!. And this is bad because it means that people like me that respond to posts on this subject have to keep on repeating ourselves.

I have lost heaps of posts which I have wanted to follow up on and it is annoying not to be able to find them.

I used to wonder why people were not using the search engine for simple things, and I thought it was because they were computer illiterate. Now I am beginning to see that maybe they are frustrated more than lacking in knowledge.

And finally, should not have to keep posts in Bookmarks just to follow up.

If you want to follow posts, just subscribe to the thread! Sounds kinda funny after you've said "Sorry, but with 20 odd years doing this stuff I find it poor when basic services are not right. Generally shows that an IT related job has been undertaken by non IT related persons."

Also, I do agree that they should mention that you can't write words consisting of 3 letters of shorter, but I don't think that (allowing shorter words) will change, because it's bascially common for every forum.

And about the new posts, the session just times out when you log out, also common on every regular forum, which imo shouldn't be bent over just because of one person complaining, just accept it, because that's how forums are made

Subscribe to post, bookmark post. Six of one, half dozen of another. But then you think you are Pink so I understand the confusion

The session does not time out, if you have chosen to stay logged in. Yes, one should log out but if one doesn't should that mean that by default they have read posts since last read. Before everybody became experts the developer only allowed for posts to be marked as read if that was the case.

As well as developing, systems administration, and code cutting, I also ran a Christian Website and a bulletin board (early days) and also forums. And what you are talking about does not ring true. These are system faults not features of the system, poor development.

If you really have that much experience, you would know that with a forum with ±40.000 users and ±500.000 posts it is way too much data to keep track of which user has read which exact post. If everybody would be reading every post, that would mean keeping track of 20.000.000.000 user/post combinations. I'm sure that once they'd implement that, you'd be complaining that the forum would be too slow.

RoyL...

The forum is built on VBulletin (vBulletin® Version 3.7.3) software, if you have the spare time, you're more than welcome to go research it over there and let me know what you find.

If the search function doesn't work for you, I'm really sorry - I've not heard any problems from anyone else, and, as we don't have a full time developer on staff, there is very little chance right now that it will be looked at. Hope that clears it up for you.

Sime. (I like Pink too...)

Thanks Sime. I will look into it for you, though it will take me some time.

To the others that commented.

As for all the stupid comments made by others, live and learn. You may be able to take photo's, though I haven't seen them, but this does not mean you are IT literate.

Discussion is discussion, but criticism is wrong and unPink is a critic of the worst type. Take the hint that I am not happy with your rude comments. I am not a moron.
