Thumbs up NYIP Unit 1 almost finished waiting on Unit 2....still impressed!

Hello, I am not sure if I should have continued this on my previous thread or started a new one so I decided to take this route. I just started NYIP and have finally finished Unit 1, well almost I am working on the photo assignment now...I have to take 3 pictures 1, showing motion or speed using what I have learned in Unit 1, 2nd Hyperfocal distance where almost everything is in focus, 3- Shallow Depth of Field. I will post them in share your shots later when they are done. Now back to the course. There were 4 lessons in Unit 1. I really enjoyed the lesson on compostion "Eye of the photographer" for a beginner like me it brought to my attention things that you might not think about being new. Lesson 2 was all about the Camera and how it was made and works, I did learn a few things there or atleast how some of the parts or settings work. Lesson 3 was very helpful to make me understand more about lenses and why you might chose one lens over another or not at all. Lesson 4 was "How to use your camera" Yes it is for beginners but it did help me learn more about how to use different shutter speeds and apertures to get different effects. The audio is still very helpful and it is "cd's" not cassettes. The DVD at the end also explains and demonstrates on how to get some different effects like Hyperfocal Distance and Waterfalls effects etc. All in all I am still very excited and can not wait to start Unit 2. I would definately reccomend the course to someone who is seriously wanting to learn ALL about photography.

I just wanted to add a link to my picasaweb albums that have some of the pictures I have taken since starting. They are not great but I like them. You can look if you want.

Very nice images, good to hear you're enjoying the course.

Is it all via correspondence?

It's pretty simple they send the books to me (to keep for good), audio cd's that sound just like your sitting in a classroom listening to an instructor talk, a dvd that show's the techniques discussed and tips how to use them. You take the tests at the end of each lesson and you mail the test back to NYIP along with your photo assignment. You will receive a recorded "critique" of you photos and tips for improvement along with your test information. You have an instructor that you can email at anytime and he or she will get back to you usually within 24 hours or you can call and speak to someone during the day if needed. I find email is much easier and then I have the emails for reference later. I really am enjoying it! Thanks for the comment on the pictures.

So, this is kind of like homeschooling? Just, with photography? That's cool! I really want to attend an institution for digital photography. I'd rather go to one then have DVDs. I'm more of a "in person" and "hands on" type of person. But, the opportunity to have a photography schooling at home is really wonderful! (:

Brent, I thought the same thing to but unfortunately I live in a small town in southern Illinois and there isn't anything around worth going too, not to mention that i have 2 children and a full time job. I really like it! By the way, I checked out your flickr, nice pics!!

I too live in a small town where opportunity only knocks when you leave! The nearest photography institute is in Nashville, which is around a 5 hour drive from here so, it's going to be challenging for whatever I decide to do! It's really amazing how you balance two children, a full time job, and your current studies! Props!

Thank you. I had just now uploaded new pictures. I was inspired to update my flickr! haha.

Ouch! 5 hours is a long drive :0 There are other schools online but after reading ALOT about several schools I chose NYIP. I couldn't find others that sent you the books and not just online learning. Keep up the good work! Photography is alot of fun.

The funny thing about NYIP to me is.. I was at their website.. and I was on it for I think 1 hour trying to find their location and campus. I looked and I looked and I couldn't find it. Then, all I found was "online" schooling. So I said to myself, "I'm an idiot. This is an online schooling agency!!!!" and I laughed. You keep up the good work as well! Photography is a lot of fun! It's an amazing way to release bottled up emotions!

I'm almost done with unit one also, just started a week ago. I'm enjoying it very much. We'll have to keep in touch with our progress. Good luck and let me know how things are going.
