If I see an embed I like, I'll click on it to go to the users flickr. But that's about it. *Edit* Since the person before me has removed their post... heh. To get the funky thumbnail/black thing, you need to use DPS's upload attachment function. It's generally not liked. See a thread a few below this one. Why not give people the chance to see your picture as large as possible (i.e. 800px on the longest edge) and have it link back to your flickr or picsa? Better than taking the chance they won't bother to look at your image since it's a thumbnail.

Yes, you really are better off using a photo sharing site, like Flickr. There are so many threads to look at, and I personally would rather just see a medium-sized photo from Flickr or another site embedded right in the post, than to have to click on the thumbnail to view it.
Here is a guide to posting pictures via a photo sharing site. |

It has all been covered - I just wanted to chip in an official sounding, moderatorly voice.
The "lightbox" effect from the forum's attachment feature does look moderately cool and probably is the reason we didn't end up banning attachments altogether a few months back. However, including larger pictures is much preferred and the best option is to include images of up to 800px on the longest side AND to link back to another site where they can be viewed larger, especially if you are asking people to comment on small details (eg. in critique). Having to click on the small attachments is a pain, especially when there are lots of posts to look through. If you don't have an external place to host photos, look in your User Control Panel and find your "pictures and albums", which gives you some storage on the site (and provides code to share the pictures in your posts).
