Default Mats and Frames

I was looking at the discounts and sells at Michaels today and started to think about how I should frame my images and the types of mats I want to use. Are thypically rules involved with the way you display your images when framing them or do you just go with what you think looks best?

Same, I just did what I wanted.

With that in mind, when looking into a frame and mat at places like Michaels or AC More or other craft stores, consider that they probably don't do the work there. Personal lesson learned on my part.

Consider going to an actual frame shop to have the work done. Trust me, you'll be pleased with the difference in workmanship.

If you order online, and you're serious about having nice looking frames and mats, be sure to order a sample kit first. They're usually pretty cheap (I got a complete mat sample kit from framedestination for about $10). It's often hard to see subtle color differences onscreen, and there's nothing worse than a slightly off-white mat conflicting with your nice B&W photo. I speak from experience here.

Also, don't underestimate the effect of a nice wide mat. For most of my 6x9 or larger photos, I go with a minimum of 3 inches -- but that's just me.
