Default Weird Problem

I've recently purchased a Canon 450D and experienced this problem on two occassions.

What happens:

On Saturday I was taking pictures at a tennis game. The sun was behind me at about an angle of 60 degrees. When I looked in my viewfinder there was a strange blue spot. This only showed when I had the sun behind me at a certain angel. The spot resembled something similar to a laser point.

On the first occassion I was taking photos at a 50th party. There were bulbs all around the room. When the light was also at a certain angle behind me or to the side of me the same blue spot appeared.

Could my viewfinder be faulty? Lens? ??????

Please help, by contacting me at photos-by-andre@webmail.co.za

Equipment when using camera:

Lens: Sigma 18 - 200 mm OS DC
Battery Grip
Canon 450D

Photos were shot in AV and TV

First question. Does the blue spot appear on the photo as well?

Second question. Does it happen with any other lens? If what you have is the only one you have, you can beg/borrow/(but not steal ) another one for testing purposes.

Third question. Does it happen in "Auto" mode as well? I mean, does it happen with only a particular aperture size?

I doubt if it is your viewfinder, it must be the lens since the VF is only showing what the lens is seeing without any processing of its own. Anyway, your answers will help narrow down on the culprit.

Thanks for getting back to me...

The blue spot does not appear on the pic

I havent tested it with other lenses, not have I tested it in auto. I hardly shoot auto these days coming to think of it.

What I remember now is that when I took pics at the 50'th at night, the spot was blurry and orange.

Sounds to me like a flared reflection of sorts.

Internal reflection off the viewfinder glass, most likely.

Sounds like the issue is with your eye and light being reflected back to you.

I'll go with Max's answer...Almost always, any visible lens flare or refractive light issues get recorded to the image...

It is possible that, since the light is behind you at an oblique angle, some light is getting to the eyepiece from behind causing a reflection/refraction there...

Be aware of your lighting. Try not to shoot with a lightsource at the very edge of the frame. Keep the camera closer to your eye when youre shooting: light from the viewfinder will make its way down
