I have light aluminium tripod with carrying handle, so i just carry it in my hand, its light and small. It's not professional tripod, but I have compact camera so I dont mind, and I think I will be able to use it with Nikon D40 when I buy it, so...

Its MK3: http://www.vanguardusa.com/product3.php?sort3=37

I've been using it with Panasonic MiniDV camera a long time now, and it's great if you don't need to move the head fast, because it does not have ball-head but classic one...

Thanks folks.

The idea of a vest sounds good although I have my doubts about 3 feet and 7 lbs stuck in the back.

I have and use a monopod but I don't find monopods all that useful for the kind of work that I'm starting now - think HDR panoramas.

It is sounding as if I need to keep the camera in the pack when i'm going to carry a tripod as well as getting a pack that is specifically set up to carry a heavier tripod.

I have a tripod bag for the tripod that I can sling over my shoulder or attach to my camera backpack. Not sure how feasible it is for you - I also have a gorilla pod that I carry attached to my bag (lightweight and portable). Since you said a monopod is not really going to work in this instance I wont fill you in on how I attached mine to my bag so it is out of the way with a lot of people around.

Jim Bryant - I like the hiking stick idea. I just leave mine attached to my camera backpack. Maybe I will start using it this way too.

In my case, there are three proto-typical walkabouts: the zoo, touristy areas, and semi-wild parks.

I have found that if I carry just the camera/lens over one shoulder and the tripod over the other, I can manage for short distances, but it's just too clumsy for all day. If I'm out in a park somewhere, I can just mount the camera to the tripod and shoulder the combo as if it were a rifle. Not quite as clumsy, but still only good for the short haul without many people. Adding my Lowepro 300 slingpack does not improve things.

My legset + ballhead weighs 7 lbs. Why? because I'm 6'4" and too fat to bend easily and often shoot in very windy areas and superlight stuff just blows over.

So, for those of you who routinely carry a tripod, how do you do it?
I just give it to my kangaroo to carry in its pouch. Sorry couldn't restrain myself.
