Default who wears or has worn a photographers vest?

I've been looking for a convenient way to carry the "minimal essentials"...another lens or 2, a 2x, a flash....
I've been using a tamrac velocity 7..it's marginal for my needs...
I've considered a lowepro stealth waist/shoulder bag......I have many bags, from huge to minuscule...Huge i.s too big for casual "walkabout" miniscule is about useless....The TAmrac 7 is "close" to what I want
I've also considered a vest.. but I'm afraid I'll also have to buy the plastic pocket protector for my pens...

Opinions? I don't want a "backpack", I don't want something bigger than needed, but not too small either...A really good/COMFORTABLE sling pack or shoulder/waist pack maybe...
(For minimum essentials, a 24-70 f2.8, 10-20mm f4, a 2x and an SB800. The camera and 80-200 f2.8 mounted and carried separate.)
I hate camera bags (everything is ALWAYS a compromise)...I think my wife might hate them more...... If not, SHE WILL!

I have this same problem...I'm interested to see what people think. I use the an AW sling pack but I am looking to another solution as I'm not super happy with it.

I picked up an army surplus assault-type vest that I used for paintballing when I was playing that seriously. It was lightweight, hardwearing, and every part of it had been designed with the idea of someone needing to access everything easily and quickly in a situation where half a second's delay could mean the difference between getting shot and being the one doing the shooting..

I pressed it into service once or twice for photography when I was shooting film (and at least one of those times was shooting at a paintball match), and it was pretty handy, although I wasn't carrying spare lenses.. It was good for holding film canisters, although I don't think I'd bother using it now with digital...

I don't know if I'd wear a "proper" photographer's vest either - maybe if I was at an event where I was being a dedicated photographer, like a concert or a festival or something, but I think I'd feel a bit daft wearing one if I was sightseeing or touristing or something like that.

Ive looked into Lowepro's system, what with the belt and straps and spots for their pockets. It just seems too pricy for what it is. Ive also looked at several "photojournalism" setups, including various belt-mounted and shoulder-mounted bags. Those seem to fit the bill rather nicely.

Lowepro has their Classified AW series (http://www.lowepro.com/classifiedseries). You're likely looking at something like the 160/200

I also have a fly fishing vest--amazing how many people ask me if I am a fly fisherlady. I am thinking about taking that up as it sounds like fun to me. The vest is great as you say--my problem is remember which pocket I put what into--I am interested in getting another vest--looked at hunting vests as well--

https://www.crumplerbags.com

may have what you want, I have the shrinkle which is a backpack that also takes my laptop (not what you want, but I'm showing familiarity with brand ) It is very comfortable to wear all day and has all kinds of sneaky/useful pockets to squirrel stuff away.

Specifically have a look at the Brazillion Dollar Home (Their names always rock)

I like this idea I'm going to check out a few fly fishing vest to see if they fit my needs. I would expect them to be less expensive; would I be correct in this thinking?
