I shoot RAW for any paid shoot or any shoot I'm practicing, or want full control over the pictures. For everyday life (aka...snap happy mom life), I shoot in JPEG.

I just shoot JPEG. I did shoot raw exclusively but then switched to RAW+JPEG due to the extra post production on RAW. I then found I never touched the RAW so started shooting JPEG exclusively

I much prefer to shoot in RAW and the one and only reason I dont a lot of the time is because I cant seem to find a program I like that edits the RAW images from my particular camera.

Can you convert to DNG first? If so, then you're set for editing just like raw.

As far as the original question, it has been hashed and rehashed on here a zillion times (and recently). A quick search will yield a ton of information on both sides of the equation.

I shoot raw only because:
1. I have more creative leeway to manipulate raw data in an artistic way that can't be done "in camera."
2. As much as I would like to ALWAYS get it right in camera, there is the occasional picture that I feel is worth "rescuing" when I blow it. Anyone who tells you they always get it right is lying.
3. Every raw file has a JPG in it already so shooting raw+JPG is a waste of card space.
4. Once I switched to JPG for "happy snaps" and forgot to switch back to raw for "real work" so I always shoot raw, even when just playing around.

Edit: I left one out that pretty much goes with # 1. You can't really "save over" a raw file and destroy your original while experimenting with artistic treatments and such.

RAW scared me awhile, so for a short period of time I did RAW + JPEG. But after forgetting to switch my WB on a few shots for a job, I found the RAW saved my butt. Haven't shot JPEG since.

But let's not get into another RAW v JPEG argument here. It's been done before!

When I saw my first RAW file opened in Photoshop from my friends camera (while I was still using a point and shoot). I realized just how much I was getting ripped off by JPEG.

I haven't looked back since getting my first DSLR. It just upsets me that on my XTi I can't save to RAW when using the automatic modes (altho I rarely use them). It's just a stupid technical limitation that should not be put into place, makes me shake my head at Canon.

Nope no good reason. If you're never touching the jpg, and never using it, why keep using up the extra space. That was when I switched off the RAW + JPG option (even though I've been somewhat tempted to use it again because the d90 lets you shoot L/Fine jpgs where the D50 was only basic ones ).
