Unhappy Having a really bad time with Nikon

I'm quite new to all this and have a Nikon D40.

I booked a training day with Nikon, which was expensive in my opinion (£140), and was way ahead of the rest of the group and didn't learn much at all. I don't know loads, just had done some basic research. We didn't learn anything about shutter speed, aperture, just how the menus on the camera work, which is easy!

Anyway, I got a SB600 flashgun for Xmas from my inlaws, and brought it along. The red panel had fallen off and I just noticed on the day, so the tutor said to book it in there as they did repairs. I sent them my receipt and warranty the next week. Then I get an estimate for £41! Of which only £2.36 is the red panel, the rest is 45mins worth of testing. Now, it had only just fallen off, there was no dust or anything inside, not sure why it would take 45 mins!

Anyway, just called up and the girl said there was evidence of it having been prized off, so not covered by the warranty. She said she'd check witht he technician and call me back.

Can't tell you how annoyed I am - I feel totally ripped off by Nikon. If they come back saying it was prized off (it wasn't!!) I am selling it all and getting a Canon before I even consider buying any lenses.

hey, don't give up hope on nikon yet, it's still a reputable brand but maybe the staff working there are not
btw, i know how you feel, i wanted them to change my focusing screen on my D40 but they told me i had to pay around a 100 bucks to fix a 21 dollar item which i could do myself and guess what, the camera is still under it's warranty

Odd, people I know that have dealt with Nikon before regarding repairs they are always uber helpful and never charged.

Was it an actual Nikon repair centre or a 3rd party?

As for the training course it does sound like a waste of time. Maybe a normal photography course at a local college or adult learning centre would be better?

Thanks for your replies!

Yes, it was the actual Nikon repair centre at Nikon House in Kingston, which is where the training day was. I pulled out my flash in the class and saw that the panel was not there, showed the instructor who booked it into the repair centre for me. It had really obviously just fallen off, as there was no dust or anything underneath, and I've hardly used it, so really don't see how it could have been damage.

Yes, I have signed up for a course at our local adult learning college - 10 evenings a week for £140! It's a not for profit college. To be honest I've just bought a load of really good books which I am enjoying working through too, much cheaper than day courses. It's hard for me to get the time off to do the courses I am studying law, look after my 2 year old daughter full-time and I help with my husband's business . That's another reason I was a bit annoyed with the Nikon course - just the loss of a day's freedom!

Oh, and when I spoke to the guy who took the course he said they didn't expect people with d40s or d60s to know mcuh about photography - I know it's an entry-level camera but give your customers some credit!

That;s the thing, I don't have the panel, it must have fallen off when I was last using it, have no idea where it is.

They left a message on my machine saying the technician says it has definitely been forced off . So I'm going to ask if I can just buy the panel for £2.36, then I am selling all my Nikon gear!

Truly horrendous experience with them all the way through, so glad I haven't invested a lot of money in lenses.

Sounds like you have a shady dealer.

Do you think? Should I try taking it back to the shop?

I just got a D90 for Christmas and I already had to send it back in for repairs! They have had it for 2 weeks now and I haven't heard anything about when I would get it back from them. The shutter kept getting stuck and then finally I got an error message on it, when I called them about it they said to just send it in. It is still under warranty but it makes me upset that it is only 2 months old and I have already had to have it repaired. I have always had Canons and love them but I talked myself into buying that D90 because it was suppose to be so wonderful.

Sorry, I didn't mean to steal your thread but when I saw it I got all upset again just thinking about it! I hope you get it fixed soon.

awwww
for those having issues with their Nikon I hope it gets better.
I too have a Nikon D40..although no problems with it yet and it's close to a year.
I have to agree with a previous poster about the "shady dealer".
Either way, dont give up on your Nikon!
good luck.
