If the tech said it looked like it was pried off, it probably was. It could be somebody at the shop just screwing with the gear, it could be somebody returned it after they broke it, who knows. I seriously doubt it just fell off on its own.

I have the SB 600 and SB 800....the pieces don't just fall off...I suppose it could happen, and yo may have received a "return"...either way, it sucks.

FWIW, I've considered switching to Canon MANY times...The fact I can get a 24MP full frame from Canon for aprox $4000 as opposed to $8000 for nikon is pissing me off.

IMO, in digital, Nikon has been chasing forever...I got sucked into Nikon because I used to be a Nikon film guy...had been away from photography, had money and eagerness but not much patience for real research...

That said, I still tend to "work with" nikon ergonomics/logic better than Canon...sucks...

I would tend to agree with jdepould and sk66. It was likely either an item that someone had broken, fixed temporarily and returned or a store demo that was broken in house and sold as "new." I am sure the Nikon techs aren't lying about the nature of the damage.

For what it is worth if you are thinking about making a switch based on your experience. I had purchased a Canon 40D as an upgrade to my aging 20D. After 3 returns due to faulty sensors I made the switch to Nikon (I have 3 now and they all work flawlessly). Oh I had a problem with a Canon P&S I had to return for a replacement as well (hot pixels). The 40D's kept within a week or so. Canon's response was they wanted me to send them in for sensor replacements. On a camera a week or so old? Are you kidding me? I returned them for brand new ones and the problems kept appearing.

Both manufacturers have their successes and their failures. Take my word for it, you are just as likely to experience problems, frustration and disappointment with Canon as you are with Nikon.

I *KNOW* this to be true, but please keep repeating it.....I'm getting dangerously close to throwing away a bunch of money, time, and experience with Nikon.....
The ONLY thing that keeps me with Nikon...I prefer their ergonomics and logic (IT MATTERS)

Id say bring it to the store and ask them for a new one. If they wont budge, then return it.

I have only had nikon gear and without wishing to tempt fate its all been good.

I had a D40, D80, D90, SB400, SB600 and a pile of lenses all of which have been perfect.

I get an error now and again on my 18/135 but thats just the connector i think and is standard.

I like Nikon, the way it works etc and iseem to have grown into itas i knew nothing about photography before.

I wouldnt even look at a canon, im blinkered!

I have all Nikon equipment and I have only had troubles with my 18 - 135mm lens. Constant focus hunting. I sent it in and they repaired and shipped it to me for free. It works great. I have not had any problems with anything else in my kit. Sorry you had to deal with that.

Cheers!

But the D3X is twice as good as the 1DsMK3 :-p

We all know the D3X price is currently over inflated. This is tempt those shooting with medium formats to a cheaper body and system. Price will fall hopefully and a cheaper D700X will probably be on the cards as well.

Honestly, yes. They're pretty evenly matched, and who's better at what technology-wise shifts from generation to generation. A few years back, Canon had the best autofocus solution with the 1D series, and all the sports shooters were using Canon. Right now, Nikon's got the better autofocus, and so a lot of sports shooters do Nikon at the moment. Similarly, Nikon used to seem to be the camera of choice for landscape photographers, while Canon's apparently edged them out for dynamic range and color right now, so now a lot of landscape photography seems to happen with Canon. Etc. I'm sure this will shift /again/ in a few more years.

Neither is perfect, but both are excellent brands.

That said, my experience comparing my own dealings with Canon's service center and my friend's dealings with Nikon is that Nikon provides coverage for longer (2 years), but it can be harder to deal with them to get repair-work done. Canon provides much shorter coverage (only 1 year), but within that year they will go the extra mile for you.
