If you go the book route. Check out www.half.com It's ebay's used book store (music and movies as well). You can get books there cheaper than any other place on the net.

As far as learning goes, I am in the same boat. I've never taken a class and have been embarrased by not knowing all the terminology. I know that I have a good eye when it comes to composition but I have been trying to learn the terms and rules. I've read and read and still get confused so know I write myself notes (as if I were taking notes for a class).

Besides that I would just keep taking pictures and let other people see them to see what you can do better. (Something I should be doing more of)

If people say why didnt you use the rule of thirds.... say it didnt apply to you...LOL.

Rules are a good place to start...... never let them control your art.

Cheers!

I personally google a lot of what i feel i need to learn Ehow is a great site with video tutorials of camera specific operations , I must admit i havent learnt very much of "the rules" as such because ive always figured they were made to be broken lol , if you follow everything other people do you tend to end up with the same results .there are always new paths to be walked and new frontiers to be explored within reason i guess .

I too am a hands on learner, also I learn better by example. So when no one is on hand to show me I actually look it up on YouTube - you will be amazed at the amount of photography tutorials on there for example - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ri9u1kVHfjY

Hope this helps.
Steve.

FWIW, if I give a critique and say "I think this would look better if you had applied the rule of thirds" and the OP replies with "I considered it but I prefer it this way".
Well, IMO that's a GREAT answer. You thought about what you were doing, and you made yourself happy. For anyone other than a pro selling to a client, that's ALL that matters. "I" don't have to like your art, but it would be nice if "you" do...

even if i didnt concider it? i dont even have no clue what the rules of 3rds are some people are religious about their photog. rules and others are like "rules? what rules? we dont need no stinkin rules!" which is how i like it! but it does make me feel stupid when other photographers that think they are better than everyone else and is all about rules, is like " well why didnt you do it this way?", know what i mean? i rpobably should just learn to let it roll off my back, cuz everyone has their own opinion.

Well, that's not "as good", but if you consider it after the advice is given and decide you still like it better the way it is, then that's good to...and you will have learned something (if you ACTUALLY considered the advice and tried it)
