It's not the camera but the photographer that takes a great picture. The camera is just a tool. This site is called Digital Photography School and not Digital SLR Photography School.

You shouldn't feel any less a photographer because you shoot with a P&S. I've taken great pictures with my P&S as well as my DSLR. Doesn't really matter which camera I use because I'm the one behind it.

Yeah, I think there seems to be a sentiment of P&S users being second class citizens to dslr owners..Not everybody needs or wants a dslr and the capital outlay that tends to go along with the purchase..As others have stated it's the photographer that makes the picture..the vision & understanding to see the photo before you actually take it, is not something thats going to be made better because you have a dslr...The camera markerters have done their job well..(i.e. "More Megapixels means a better photogragher/photograph")

P&Sers are a minority her, but I think we're something like 25-30%--which is pretty respectable, IMHO. I would like a DSLR, but can't afford it and can't fit one in my purse. To see what your point and shoot can do, go to flickr and "Explore" Camera Finder. You will be amazed (or maybe not!) at what you see!

I don't think this is the case and a separate area may just serve to create or reinforce this perception. There are multiple examples of threads stating how its not the camera, its the photographer and ideas for how to work with a P&Ss limitations. I'm also sure most people don't judge a photo by the camera but by the photo.

DSLRs have some big drawbacks as well. You can't get them in your pocket. They are very expensive. You need dedicated lenses for different types of photography. They don't produce pictures with as much pop straight out of the camera meaning you need to spend time in PS.

Maybe people should just be discouraged from putting their gear in their signature.

I did say it wasn't anything anyone had said, just a feeling I have myself, plus the way people aspire to a dslr even if they don't have one. And of course that I myself desire one but can most likely never have one. Not even for financial reasons so no winning the lottery dreams, just that my arthritis means that even my Mum's better p+s with a 10x optical zoom is too heavy for me but I shall just resolve to be the best I can with what I have and be happy that I can even have this hobby including computer manipulation of images which was not available in the past.
Still, the idea of a p+s area in equipment where the 25-30% of us who use them can chat about their unique problems and advantages might be a good idea, just not a place to put all the p+s images.
I know it's the photographer not the equipment, but sometimes I would like to a be able to take a fantastic pic of the moon or something tiny or that's not so grainy etc. And also that I'm not sure I could ever sell pix taken with a p+s [landscapes etc in an art gallery I mean, obviously not portraits or weddings] even if they were good in other ways. Or am I wrong in this concern?

Heck -- sometimes I limit myself to my cell phone camera, to force myself to pay attention to composition and subject, instead of technical details. Of course, I don't usually post those photos (... mainly because my phone's bluetooth refuses to work ...). Regardless, the point is the photos, not the equipment. The equipment is interesting, but not essential to know, nor is it a parameter which is good for segregation of photos.

I have made 16x20 prints from my old Sony P&S, and they look great. I wouldn't mind putting one or two of them up in a gallery, either. It really is the photographer.

Me and fletch agree 100%

And from reading all the post and those on previous threads it is actually the P&S users that have the problem. You should never feel that your images are not as good as those shoot with a DSLR. In reality the only difference between the two today is the ability to change lenses, and with some P&S camera's having 10-13x zoom and around 22-24mm at the wide end they don't need to change lenses.

I am afraid that the P&S issue is something that is also driven by book sellers and camera shops to keep up profits. I still have an old Kodak DC3200 1.3mp and use it.

i am one of the proud P&S users here and from the start i disclosed that i am using one..i am very well aware that we are just a handful here but i really dont feel like a second class citizen..i admit that it is a lil bit intimidating to post head on with DSLR users but i've posted decent images from my P&S and i think they are well accepted and liked by fellow members..people here are nice and there is really no need to distinguish what gears are being used by anybody..we are here to learn and to grow as photographers and the gears used are just instruments to achieve that ultimate goal..

in the end..when life throws you lemons..suck it and find some tequila..(lol..you do get my point..)

I don't like the idea of separating cameras. It has the undertones of a 1930's Germany. Also, this website is titled Digital Photography School. To me, it means any camera that is digital. If you see an image you really like, why not simply post a reply; "What equipment did you use?".

Yes I only have a P&S also and I'm saving for my first DSLR bit by bit but, inadequacy is only in ones mind!
