Default must have lenses

what are the must have lenses that every one uses? i have a canon rebel xsi with a 18-55mm and a 55-250mm (which im now thinking wasnt the best choice). i mostly shoot landscapes, portraits, close ups/macro. and dont have a whole lot of money to be spending... so i guess im asking what you guys think is the best lens to buy for all these photography types.

1) High Quality and fully automatic
2) Versatile
3) Inexpensive

Pick two....

wow thats a hard one! probably inexpensive (under $600) & good quality. i think ive got a good range for portraits already, so im looking for something with a bigger zoom than i already have, or a telephoto. i know that i will get a 10-22mm for sure within the year for landscapes...

Just gonna thrown in the one that someone is bound to mention regardless of camera maker or model:

50mm 1.8

...and I agree with Mr Guy.

I'm still new with this camera mularkey but I think (and I may be wrong) that a 50mm is a fixed lens - so you can't zoom in and out - you'll have to physically move to make sure you get the focus right!
The important thing is the f/1.8 ... this is a much bigger aperture than we tend to get on kit zoom lenses - means you can do a great deal more with it!

And now, one of the more experienced photographers will tell you properly!

The lower f stop lets you shoot in lower light conditions and you get shallower depth of field. The 50mm is f/1.8 and 18-55mm is f/3.5-4.5 (at least with Canon). Obviously you can't zoom with the 50mm prime but it's much faster and sharper. And of course it's dirt cheap.

Take a look at these threads:

so now whats a good telephoto lens?

ive got 18-55 (pretty good for portraits)
a 55-250 (not sure why got this one, probably would have been happier with 70-300)
gonna get a 10-22 (for landscapes)
and now maybe the 50mm

in general, does this sound like a pretty good set of lenses for just about everything?
