Where do you live? Most of the time it's just people on power trips making up rules.

Unfortunately, power does corrupt some insecure individuals. While I do not go out of my way to stand up to this sort, when confronted I do and almost always they will back down.

The more you let them get away with it, the stronger they become.

Good Luck

Well, I think they can not arrest me for taking pictures, but till I explain that to them, who knows what can happen...
Anyway, I had expirience with agressive police officers before (a couple of years ago I was suspicious becouse I was standing under the tree to get out of rain...in the middle of the town, in front of library...), and I used body language (this is good to know... three times evaded being mugged thanx to this) and soothing tone on them, while explaining who am I and what am I doing... when they realised I did not take a photo at all, they became polite and calmed down a little bit... And become really friendly when I said I will come by the station to find out someone designated to talk with civilians and explain to me what I can take pictures of... I think they even got scared of that a little bit that I really will do that

Nine times out of 10 it's the right thing to do, one time out of 10 you end up on YouTube getting beaten with your own camera. I guess that one time isn't necessarily wrong, but it sure is unpleasant.

Red face the met

the met is a public new york museum.
They don't let you take pictures.. or even pull out your camera....

It was the ahrdest thing I ever did.

But i checked where the worker were and found the best place for shots was in the egyptian display.

They has this piece of wall/room from a tomb ( i can't remember exactly what it was) and i went inside.

I must have taken 14 pictures at the speed of light and ran out.

My face might have looked like a crazy serial killer... because i was scared and excited about breaking the law. lol

It was really funny and scary, i felt like a spy/criminal.

During my recent vacation to Genting Highlands, Malaysia I was carrying my camera all thru the day shooting various beautiful locales. During the day, we decided to see a very high profile 'Las Vegas' style concert.

When we were entering the concert hall, I was refused entry since I was carrying my camera. They gave me 2 options -- either to get out (!) or hand over my camera to the security card. Next followed a very loud verbal tug-of-war. What pissed me off was their 'bully' attitude and their total lack of respect for a customer.

I was not willing to hand over my camera bag to security, since I did not trust the guys, one bit, with my expensive gear. Finally, they allowed me to take the camera inside, on intervention of their supervisor, with a strong suggestion that I will not shoot any pictures.

Normally, I would keep my word, but due to the insulting behavior of the security, I took out the camera during the show and shot off some nice pictures. My way of getting back to those toughies!!!

If they had let me get the camera in without this song and dance, I would have respected the rules and not shot any pictures.

But alas they misbehaved and I lost a "bit of my conscience"

The only time I ran into this was in Florence, Italy when we went to see the statue of David. We missed the "No photographs" sign - there was a huge crowd - before we went in. People were taking all kinds of shots, so we snapped a few with our point and shoot. Then we noticed the little ladies running around furiously saying, "No photograph!" It was as if they were trying to hold back a tidal wave with a bucket. No one paid any attention to them.

I think it's become almost impossible to stop. They don't ask people to leave behind phones which also have cameras, not too mention the grainy video which keeps youtube in business.

I once snuck my camera in to a Shania Twain concert in Charlotte, NC and was snapping pictures when one of the employees of the coliseum told me that I wasn't allowed to take any pictures and that I needed to put my camera away. Later on during the concert Shania went down into the audience and asked if anyone had a camera and she posed with some of them while they took her picture. I've often wondered if it was her that didn't want the pictures taken or the Charlotte Coliseum. (After the coliseum employee left I continued to take pictures but I made sure that I didn't use the flash. )

It worries me just taking shots on the street. I mean some of the looks you get are crazy. I smile a lot and try to avoid people who look very upset. I usually follow the rules on photographs at events unless there are lots of people with their cameras out.

Every event or area is different and has to be handled in a unique way. Sigh.
