We are able to photograph the flightline in the air force, you just have to have a photo pass.

I have gone to the local mall, and they said we couldn't take pictures. Since it is private property I put the camera away.

I'm shooting "Hot Chocolate" tonight, he protects his copyright too... "Errol Brown - The Image" is what his copyright protects, not him - as JDP pointed out. It's been tricky getting a photo pass...

I had my camera with me in a cave in Egypt, I took a photo (I didn't see the tiny, hidden sign that said no cameras) A security guy came running over, shouting at my in Egyptian... He got the message across, and took my camera from me... I couldn't be bothered arguing, so I went on looking through the cave... At the end of my visit, I went back to him - he tried to tell me that it was going to "cost" me to get my camera back, or he'd take me to the police. I gave him the lowest form of currency I had on me (equivalent to less than on cent) and took my camera, he looked at it and said - no, you need to pay more - at which point I said "Let's go talk to the Police"... he walked away

(note: I've been to Egypt many times and know how the "security" works, I also know that there is absolutely NO reason or law that meant I should have let him have my camera in the first place... I also know that if he'd tried to leave with it, the rest of the security personell would have given him a beating, that's how it works)

I was in a casino in Michigan once and they had rule that camers were not allowed. They were at first going to take my camera away and then they were going to take my card away. It took some serious talking (mostly cause the guy was a jerk) but after deleting my images of my husband in front of him he finally left me alone

I'll come down on the unpopular side of this argument.

We photographers have enough trouble being harrassed in public places where photography is allowed withougt people going and making things worse by "breaking" the rules in private and other restricted venues.

Grow up and put the camera away.

That's why smart people earn money by making software that can return deleted pics from memory cards

I wouldn't call that the unpopular side, I'm right with you, and I know there are other people who think along the same lines.

I'll be happy to play the devils advocate here. if we always played by the rules, the world would be missing out on some truly great art pieces.
I dont always condone "breaking the rules or the law" but there have been many a time I have crawled under a fence and I can tell you that most "famous" photographers have done the same thing
Dont get me wrong, i totally agree with putting the camera away at an indoor concert or toehr venue where copyright issues are at hand

I had a situation like this last year that has turned out to be quite favorable.
I was wanting to shoot a dance competition that my daughter was entered in that had posted "No Photography" on its web site. When I arived, it was posted "No Video taping".

Upon inquiring that I was interested in shooting my daughter and her studio's acts only, I was directed to the event coordinator. After explaining myself and chatting for a few minutes, she ended up hiring me to shoot the entire event for her web site. That contact has turned into a request to again shoot the event this year and provide on-site photo sales!

If you can establish the right contacts, respect, courtesy, and direct honesty can go a long way.

Is it artist or venue based prohibition? Both?

I went to see Tool in Jesolo, Italy a few years ago, and those bouncers were jumping anyone popping out their camera. On the other hand, Maynard James Keenan was asking people to simply not use their flashes. *shrug*

In San Antonio, the AT&T center explicitly forbids "professional" photography equipment. I'm not even sure what that means any longer.

Whether or not I'd take my camera to these events depends upon how involved I would like to be. I often find trying to take photos at these large events distracting and lessening my enjoyment. If i could or chose to detach myself from the event, I'd probably have a better time taking photos.

I agree with this one...When I go to a concert, I want to enjoy it with my whole concentration. I don't really like taking photos in there 'cos it's distracting to myself. If I'd just try to get nice photos to remember the event by, I'd actually miss the real event. I don't like watching certain things through the camera lens.
Sure, I can take a few snaps if I get the opportunity and if I'm in a good position in some open air festivals but a few snaps is just about it.
